Am trying to figure out when The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and John Hartford played at UT's Alumni Gym, sometime around winter of 1975 or 76 ?

Bonus question: Closest to the above date, when did Florida play at UTK, men's basketball?

I have no idea, as I was not yet born...but John Hartford and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were bands I grew up listening to (due to their place in my parents' record collection) and it sounds like a fine concert to have attended!

Am bumping this thread, because I also remembered, around the same mid70s time that I am asking about, I went to another concert at Stokeley: War and Ohio Players. Did any of y'all go to that one? How can I look up exactly when it was?

According to Grok...

Ohio Players performed at Stokely Athletic Center on Monday February 24, 1975.

War performed at Stokely Athletic Center on Tuesday February 24, 1976.

Both performances were one year apart.

Awesome! Thanks!

Can you ask Grok when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and John Hartford, played at UT? That concert was not in the SAC, but was in the old Alumni Gym, near the foot of The Hill.

You’re thinking of two separate mid‑1970s performances at the University of Tennessee’s Alumni Gym (“Alumni Memorial Gym”), both featuring Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and John Hartford—though not on the same bill:

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at UT Alumni Gym

They performed at the University of Tennessee’s Alumni Gym on May 19, 1973. The show was noted as “solid,” with the band headlining their own concert and described as “wild and exciting.”

They also played again in the spring of 1974 as part of an outdoor show at Circle Park that was moved indoors to Alumni Gym; this performance occurred without member Jimmy and included other acts in that lineup.

John Hartford at UT Alumni Gym

John Hartford (or John Hartford Band) is credited with performing at Alumni Gym in 1972 or 1973, though the exact date is somewhat ambiguous—it’s listed simply as “1972/73.”

If you recall John Hartford opening for or being part of the same evening as Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the closest alignment would be their show in 1973—Hartford possibly performing in the same year, even if not on the exact same date.

Ah, the 70s…
Elton John at Stokley.
Jimmy Buffet at Stokley.
Steve Martin at Stokley.
Tom Waits in the student center for 50 cents.
Jackson Brown at the Civic Auditorium.
George Clinton’s mothership tour landing in Knoxville.
