Michigan Contacted CBJ per FootballScoop (merged)

If he speaks, he loses leverage in the negotiations of his raise and extension.

Why would he say something, when there's nothing to say? Butch ain't leaving Tennessee. Enough already.

He's not going anywhere. In fact, like I've stated before IMO if it becomes public that Michigan made a push for him and he turned them down that HELPS recruiting because it shows that another major program wanted out coach and he chose to stay.

New Contract is on the way is the word. Goody. All these rumors due is get guys raises. They have to love it when their name gets to swirling around out there. Cha-Ching..$$$$

does anyone know how "friendly" their relationship is?

Butch was on his staff as an assistant while DeBord was the Head Coach at Central Michigan.

And DeBord is running day-to-day operations...

When Jones leaves he will take the recruits not already signed with him. They are sold on Butch Jones not UT. You can wave buh-bye and we will have many years to discuss the downfall of UT's football program.
It seldom goes like that even when a coach actually does sell himself (Kiffin) and not the program. From every account I have heard, Jones sells UT far more than he sells himself.

What would happen is that rival recruiters across the SE would swoop in and try to pick off as many as they could. It is just very doubtful many or any would follow Jones to Michigan.

. . . How come he can't say, I'm not a candidate and I'm staying here at TN? . . .

Because if he really is a candidate at Michigan (not likely) and they ready do offer him the job (not likely) and it really does make sense to him to take it, he'll take it.

Just like most anyone else would do if a suitor from another employer came calling to them.

I disagree but I hope neither of us find out.:good!:

:eek:lol:Why would a coach leave a place where he's busted his butt for two years to start over prior to even accomplishing anything. Then be the bottom of the barrel pick for Michigan.
Crazy logic here just to stir the pot.:mf_surrender:

I thought I was severely depressed and negative but you can get on here and look at some of this crap and feel pretty good about yourself. I do not post much but some of you need to think a little bit before you do some posting.

I really don't see CBJ leaving anytime soon but this is one thing I really miss about the Fulmer years. We never had to worry about Fulmer leaving for another job and I think that was a big part of his success here. All through the 90's and early 2000's players knew when they signed here Fulmer would be their coach all four years. The following quote is from Butch Jones after he signed a contract extension with Cincinnati the year before he left. Does it sound familiar?

“I think I’ve proven that I want to be here,” Jones said last year after he agreed to the new contract. “This is a very special place. We’re building something really special here. I ask our players to make a commitment and I need to make a commitment back.”

If you didn't worry during the Fulmer years it is likely because these sorts of things were covered and accessible 24/7 like they are now, not because this sort of thing didn't ever happen. If memory serves, there was a real shot that Fulmer was about to be hired away in the sunset of the Major's years.

Maybe I have something in common with Butch besides being all Vol. After someone asks me the same question time and time again, I just ignore it and say nothing. Especially when I have more important things to do. I expect CBJ to be out selling selling UT to 5* and 4* recruits for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, . . . . and not rushing to respond to the 400th rumor of the day.

Maybe he will take the "best staff in America" with him. Maybe we can get Bo Pelini. Seems like I saw somewhere he has won at least 9 games every year since 2008.

Somewhere?...like on his Wikipedia?...Sherlock?

In truth... because if he said it once people would ask why he hadn't said it again. If he said it twice... why not 3? Three? Why not 10?

You also have the Urban effect. In each of his first 3 coaching jobs, he said he didn't want to leave. Though he was a bit more sophisticated about leaving UF... he left all three of those jobs. Jones seems like a much better character guy than Meyer... but he'll leave if he thinks it is is best. Why put a bunch of statements out that you have to eat if someone makes an offer you can't refuse?

All that said, I don't think Jones is going to Michigan. I don't think the timing is right for him nor do I think he's what they need right now. Honestly, they need a "name".

I agree but we needed a name also n ended up with the bsia..so I'm not sure they will get the name.. If fla couldn't get a name i think they will have trouble.
They do not want butch imo

In the sunset of the Majors years? Majors didn't have a sunset it was more like an unexpected eclipse. Anyway I said 90's and early 2000's. Once Fulmer was HC here he wasn't going anywhere. There was one or two rumors but Fulmer wasn't leaving Tennessee and all Vol fans knew it.

has not squashed the idea of him not leaving. How come he can't say, I'm not a candidate and I'm staying here at TN?

Is he really waiting on this contract? What is he telling recruits?

I'm telling you, I don't like it!!!!!

How many times must he say it for you to be satisfied?

I think the NCAA or maybe the conferences should mandate that only one answer can be used when asked about job changes. For example, "coach Jones, are you considering leaving Ut to go to Michigan?" Standard answer should be...."no comment" or "I cant comment on any jobs other than the one I have right now". Any answers other than the answers decided on would result in fines.

This would solve several problems.

1. Reporters would quit asking questions if the answer was always the same
2. It would keep coaches from eating their words if they took another job
3. It would stop giving fans false hope.

You must've thought we were going to be undefeated this year with the 6th hardest schedule in the country, and an entirely new offensive and defensive line.

Understandable.

Right. He and his agent didn't put it out there that there is a mutual interest between him and Michigan so he could get a big raise or actually go somewhere else.

I have no idea and you don't either. The only fact we know for sure is that CBJ was getting a raise regardless of Michigan. Mark Stoops got bumped to a higher salary then CBJ so there was no doubt Butch Jones was getting a raise and extension. It's a common courtesy for coaches to listen. Look I'm a realist CBJ agent may have used Michigan to angle for a bigger then expected raise but that is his job afterall. Its still a complement to the job CBJ is doing. I don't remember Dooley getting a raise based at least partially on his potential for being hired away. Marketplace not ransom.
