Message boards...

I think you miss the frustrations of most. You say they come to be loved for their efforts and they are when they give great effort. A.J. Johnson gives great effort and that is the "Tennessee Standard" you speak of.

Not every athlete is praised for great effort. You might praise them as long as they're trying, but not everyone does, especially on these forums.

For example, let's take Palardy. The guy is freaking talented kicking the football, but when the lights come on, he can't handle the pressure. All of a sudden, people mock the guy and talk about how terrible he is. Just because he doesn't perform well on Saturdays doesn't mean he doesn't give his all.

And Skylar McBee, as another example. The kid loves the orange and brings it in practice everyday from what we hear. He hits 30% of his 3's (something a lot of people in here couldn't dream about doing) and then earns the title McBrick.

Again, I'm not suggesting you are one of those people, but they are on here. It has to be frustrating as an athlete to be putting in the effort and still getting criticized by the arm-chair quarterbacks that may or may not have ever played a down in their lives. We will never know, because they hide behind a screen name when they do it.

really?? getting upset over internet message board banter.. give me a effin break. if these guys want to know what being put down and harassed is all about have them call up Jonathon Crompton. He can tell them what the real **** is like. Looks like he can also teach them how to be a man.

Crompton is another example out of many. But it's all the same (even if Crompton did receive death threats), and it's all pretty childish to talk to a kid that way. Yeah, yeah, welcome to the real world, and all, but most of these kids aren't even allowed to drink legally. They're just now leaving the grasp of their parents and learning about life outside of immediate family. They are amateur athletes (well, most of them anyway) whether we like it or not.

The problem with this is that these athletes chose UT. They probably visited and loved the atmosphere in Neyland Stadium, maybe had the rock painted for them, and wanted to come play in a place where they would be loved for their efforts. At the first sign of one of these kids not being up to "Tennessee standards", people jump all over their cases. Those athletes chose to come here to play football for UT. They owe you or any other fan nothing. They owe the school for the free education. Players might choke under pressure, but that's no reason to bash them. Just enjoy it. If anything at all, then criticize the coaches for putting the players in or not coaching them right, or recruiting them for that matter.
I agree i havent criticized any1 but to tell som1 that put their money time and emotion into ut football that they dont have a right to voice their opinion is silly ps who do u think pays for their tuition? us alumni and fans

And death threats is way too far if u want to say the coaching staff sux or u dont think the team gave a full effort thats one thing..

Whatever....you know I'm right. Put yourself in Bray's shoes. If I was Bray and read some if the crap on here I'd have a very strong disliking for the fan base.....and your type....is the type that does nothing but gripe and complain like a teenage girl with PMS

If I put myself in Bray's shoes, the furthest thing from my mind is UT message boards, and I'm sure that's the furthest thing from his.

Also, trying to insult someone makes your argument a lot weaker and less believable, but that's a theme with the Dooley supporters on this board.

My solution would be to not log onto message boards and get better at football.... Just a suggestion..

According to an article I just read on 24/7, the touchdown to Downs on Saturday was on a play call that didn't exist, and that Bray called. Awesome!!

No big deal... The fact the adjustments are made from the sidelines is a bigger deal... That suggests someone doesn't know what they're seeing...

I see you and I are of the same mindset, because I love Skylar McBee for his hustle. I think we just probably disagree on Bray. I think he'd be lucky to have half of Skylar's character

Reviews is not much different than message boards in the sense people read them to get a feel for things. The most read reviews are for free apps for smart phones, since the internet has grown by leaps and bounds the past 8 years, people have become more and more social. Now it is ok to tell everyone on FB or Twitter your every move, and players and parents of players are going to read message boards because we have now been programmed over the years to seek out info at the click of a mouse.

I have said numerous times that the Fire DD and this or that player sucks is doing more to undermine our recruiting than anything else. Not all players sign their LOI to play for the school, they sign because of the bonds with the coaching staff. If they get the feeling that staff won't be there they start to look elsewhere. Do you think Bama recruits so well because it is Bama or is it because they know Saban is going to be there coaching them and his track record of sending players to the NFL?

If the booing starts again, the program will be on life support.

neither, it's because Saban has a winning record of titles (Dooley doesnt) and he is a great recruiter

Do u honestly think no one at Bama b¡tched when Mike Shula was losing games? I guess they weren't true fans either or they were Negatides? Bet no one is complaining abour firing Shula now though.

I have always believed that many of the "fans" on here are trolls from rival teams trying to tear down our team and players. When "fans" on here hope that our coach will be fired, I can assure that they are not real supporters of the Tennessee Vols. Players, the negative trolls on message boards do not represent the vast majority of UT fans, who support you during the tough times.

The trolls from al, usce, ga & fl want UT to keep dooley as the would never have a problem with a win.

1. Tennessee doesn't have the in-state high talent pipeline other states enjoy.
2. We have to spend more, travel more, try more to get quality recruits.
3. Lately, seems once we get them we don't always keep them.

Have said before most posters don't realize when they talk ugly about players, the team, coaches etc they become the best recruiting tools for rival coaches than anything else. Some of the stuff I've seen on here regarding Memphis, players from Memphis, Murfreesboro, Nashville and the populations and players from these regions and elsewhere have been very disparaging. To the point some parents and players feel they should go anywhere but the the UT. I mean the stuff I've seen whenever opportunity opens the door (i.e. Bar Knox incident) is downright bigoted. It's not just the usual instant gratisfaction posters, which are little more than Jerry Springerist whiners, but some just plain ugly putdowns of players, regions, and often without knowing and in some cases carrying about the full story. Example, lambasting Bray before and after it was revealed he played sick. Players and apparently their parents do read what's posted into boards. Tennessee can't afford to have sought after players going elsewhere enmass. But into today's world of digital over-information, stuff gets out. In today's reactionist mentality, people respond to what they perceive as a real circumstance faster. Running off prized recruits due to fan attitudes that get interpreted as student body attitudes is already happening. I say again, sooner or later some smart coach is going to figure out how to link ugliness into his recruiting efforts. Making it readily, maybe even real time available to recruits and their parents. Thus making Vols fans who behave like bigots the best recruiting tool a rival coach could ever hope for.

So again:

Agreed.

There was an actual, tangible example of this last year. I forget his name, but there was a big time recruit that had been committed to UT for months. He took a visit to Arkansas and Petrino convinced him that Dooley was going to be fired this year, so he switched schools.

Odd change of events, isn't it.

I cant really go along with that....really. I think the majority of the fanbase who are unhappy right now are of the opinion that Bray could flourish under the right coaching......that goes for all the players. JMO

That goes for ALL the players?????? Really????

What I want to see from this team is some leadership. I want to see guys getting each other fired up on the sidelines. Leadership is what this team really lacks. Someone needs to step up and take charge. Hell get Al Wilson to be on the sidelines at every game. I want to see emotion from this team in a pissed off/ fired up manner that their going to go out there and give it their all and knock some heads off!!!

I appreciate your sentiment, but I'd like to offer two thoughts. Number one is the reason for the negativity is poor performance and you saying there is too much directly correlates to frustration. My other thought is this...you are probably right that some negative posters dont know the first thing about teamwork and commitment. However, i'm pretty sure there are some passionate fans that have played tons of sports and have experiences like military service that have taught them the value of team. I believe these people love the vols and find it excruciating to watch some of the players they don't feel are committed to team.

i agree with what you are saying.we live in a time where i & me is a bigger problem & there are some that do not know we or team.some will never embrace our university as we do & are here as a stepping stone to the next level.also these are 18-21 year old young men & they are gonna make mistakes as most of us have during our trip down life's path.we also live in a society that has a now mentality.thwy want success, wins & all that goes with it now.i am not defending coach dooley, think he has not handled several things too well but i'm also not unrealistic like many are & want to start all over again, yet.i played sports in high school served in the regular army & am stil serving in the reserves & from my experience,i feel that many of the posters in the football forum are exactly what i said & if we start having success will be singing praises as if they never uttered a negative word.every team has their share of fair weather fans, the football forum is full of them.one has to make their way into the recruiting forum to find much of any sanity & to be able to read & discuss things logically.i do not mind negativity but we have some on here that make it a constant.again i will apologize for my long post volnation,GO VOLS !!! VFL

I think Bray is getting better than he was last year mentally. I love his fearlessness, and his ability to not be afraid of a big play. However, I do believe that of he had Peyton Mannings head on his shoulders he'd possibly be one of the best to ever play the game, simply because of his God-given ability.

You'll be hard pressed to find someone that don't agree with this, but let's be honest here, there are only a handful of players in the history of college football that had a head on their shoulders like Peyton.

Very true... We were very fortunate to land him in the first place. What a great representative he's been for the Vols.
