Merk is entering the portal

Managing rosters has become nearly impossible with NIL money and the portal. Building teams always took time and planning. It's hard to plan when you don't know who is going to be around and who isn't.
.
And Volnation may fire the head coach at any moment.

Agree that is best case scenario and I hate having to go to portal every year for a QB. Maybe G-Mac or Brandon becomes the guy in 27 and we have stability for a few years.
If GMac isn't ready in 27 then he's not the guy.
He needs to stay in the cafeteria and drinking multiple protein/hi calorie drinks a day

Not sure who would contact GMac though, very little tape. I can't see it being someone able to pay more than what he's being paid here plus he needs more weight.
Friday should at least give us some direction of where law suit is going. I think eventually if it ever gets settled in court, JUCO years are going to not count since the NCAA doesn't govern JUCO.
I agree that Friday is a pivotal day for what Heupel will do in the portal and I think Joey A comes back and I hope G-Mac stays.

As for someone contacting G-Mac, I think he could be big enough for the Big 12 or ACC and while that isn't a "big 2" conference, if he has NFL aspirations he needs to have some starter reps on film and more than one season would be better.

I hope he stays but I could see him making a decision based upon Sunday, not Saturday.

I watched the 2025 season highlights this morning. It's hard to really know when it's a highlight film, but this guy appears to be the real deal. Throws strikes with different arm angles, accurate deep balls, surprising as a runner. He would be a great get, in my opinion. Disclaimer; I did say it was a highlight film.
I watched too he looked ok against the competition but I believe they still went 7-5

From what I have seen of Merck, he has yet develop the confidence needed to play/start at Tennessee or any top 25 team. I would not be surprised if if he transferred to another team and developed into a pretty good QB once he gets the opportunity to play and gain experience.
I agree alot of it is a confidence issue that needs to be fixed with live repititions. But teams aren't patient enough to let kids develop anymore. Unless you are a 5 star QB, you are getting yanked pretty quick.

I think his best route would be to go to a FCS school where the coaching staff could be patient with him. And he could develop there for 2 years and if he proves his worth, maybe earn a role back at a P4 school.

It’s a nil college football era now, I say you skip the high school QB that’s paided big coin for bench warming, go for 3 experienced juco/portal QBs with the best man starting. With this you will always have an experienced backup.
Pay scale depends on your position in the pecking order of the three.

Fixed your post just a smidgen. From what I see, Heupel makes NOTHING happen in the portal. He REACTS to what happens there. Very passive. So we had better hope either Joey Football wins his case, or a good QB enters the portal and Heupel is able to sign him. Otherwise, 2026 just got even more 'interesting'.

I’d say if not an FCS School, look for a G5 program. If you’re good enough, they will find you. Joe Flacco went to Delaware, Cam Ward started at Incarnate Word, the North Texas QB now Mestemaker didn’t even start a game in HS and he’s going to be extremely sought after in the portal.

Wish Jake the best of luck and hopefully he balls out wherever he goes. GBO 🍊

I disagree. We've had some really good players come through the portal. McCoy, Hood, Star Thomas, Joey, Moe, Brazzell, Kitselman, Heard, Norman-Lott, Thornton

After several times in play Merk has showed nothing! I wish the guy the best I do. No hard feeling. Guy should explore his options cause he will not start here barring injuries. I don't blame him the writings is on the wall...Maybe a smaller school he could succeed. Good luck Sir.....

Thank you Merk,

GBO
