Probably a good move for him so he can start rather than be buried on the depth chart.
Will get great experience for a transfer to a big school.

given the fact that Huepel tried to pay Leavitt 7 mil for one season says he doesn't think much of GMac either. I think they were 3a and 3b on the depth chart. we really didn't have a #2 QB last year.
Leavitt was a better option than GMac. Doesn’t mean that GMac isn’t well thought of by the coaching staff. Heupel tries to add whoever he can to improve our chances of winning; leavitt checks that box.

GMac was always going to be very limited in snaps last year due to his size. Was discussed with his parents and him prior to the season last year, it was always the plan. Merk was terrible but either one would’ve been risky if Joey had went down.

Merk just committed to UConn. That is a huge step down from UT. Wish him the best of luck.
I will be praying for his success. Everyone has to begin somewhere they can eventually get a starting position. There is room for everyone.

Y'all remember last spring that some folks on here thought we should ride with Merk? That was hilarious šŸ˜‚

I hear on here all the time ā€œif you have the chance to upgrade, you upgrade.ā€ We took a swing at the highest rated portal qb and people on here equate it to Heupel thinking Gmac is bad. Hilarious

I don’t think he or anyone else expected him not to take a step down, but I actually was expecting a bigger step down than this.

lol you don't pay 7 million for a QB with serious injury concern for a single year if you have complete faith that you already have your starting QB. why would you pay that money if you are positive you can win with GMac. the answer, of course is that you don't pay all that money if you don't have to and you're completely rebuilding your defense.

sorry but this logic makes no sense. if you have 100% faith that you can win 10 or more games with GMac then it's absolute lunacy to spend all those millions on another QB with injury concerns.

I'm positive that the coaching staff "thought highly" of Merklinger too and now he is playing for one of the worst D1 football programs there is.
