Looking at the game. I thought the offense played well enough to win, we should've lined up w/ 2 te and ran it down their throats from the 2. We should be able to pick up corner and outside blitzes. But we scored 31, and we should always win when we score that many points.
The defense- secondary played well enough to win I thought. I expected to give up 1 or 2 big plays to their receivers. The d-line and linebackers played terrible. I thought the backers were supposed to be the best in the sec they couldn't get off blocks, weren't plugging holes, etc. The d-line looked worse than last year NO PRESSURE we didn't even touch longshore all night long. I could understand if we were young on the d line, but we are looking at another year of mediocrity. I don't understand why the last 2 yrs our defense has been so pathetic. We were supposed to be sooooo fast, they were saying this was fastest team in the fulmer era, if this is the case then cal must have nothing but track stars, because they were A LOT faster than us. I personally think fulmer should go, but what I don't under is chavis' defense falling so far so fast, by the way he is the lb coach and they looked like a bunch of freshmen who were trying to learn assingments last night. I look for us to lose 2 out of the first 3 or maybe 0-3. usm won't be easy. Ark st also only lost by a td to texas. so we have to worry about them as well. I know fulmer has won nat. champ and sec. but we have done nothing in the last 10 yrs to speak of.

Our secondary was horrible. Actually the whole D was. And you can throw in the special teams also.

We lost.... It's over and done with.

All the players can do is learn from it.

Last night tells me if we don't figure out a way to get more pressure on the QB from our front 4, it's going to be a very long season. The entire D-line was MIA last night.

I'm not saying our secondary played awesome, all I'm saying they played better than i thought they would and for a young secondary, they were not the reason we lost. when a qb has alllll day to throw no secondary can cover forever.

Agreed. The defensive line wasn't able to get qb pressure or stop Cal's running game. UT gave up a lot of yds.

I'm worried about the future.

Last year we ran and threw well against Cal. The rest of the season, not so much. Will it be the same this year?

Hope not. I'm not saying Cal is not a good team because they are, and they were last year. But I really think we will not know much about our football team until the Florida game.

Hard to play LB when the DL in front of you are not holding up the OL to create lanes for you. I think Karl should be replaced by Myers-White though b/c couldn't get off a block to save his life.

Yes I think the Uf game will tell the tale of how our season will play out.

it tells me we need to find some playmakers.

they got two big plays. we got 0.

one big play in the first 3 quarters and who knows what would have happened.

Well as a tn fan i must agree with the majority....I too feel the doom and gloom loosing our season opener, however it could be alot worse....Tn. for the first time in a few years actually mixed it up with the new no huddle offense....And it,,,, the "ol trusty" run up the middle, wasnt the dominating play as it usuallys is especially in a season opener....In my OWN opinion Tn could have beaten that same Cali team on any given saturday but like college football is, has and always will be, the team with the hunger and the will takes home the W...Lets face it Cali had more to prove....But watch out this young Tn. team may be hard to handle later on........:peace2:

Good point i I believe our young wide recievers will come of age and be a big lift for our O. I would hope that a solution can be found for our D problems. What to do right now is what must be done to salvage a season throwing coaches out at the start of a season is not a good thing to do and to talk of such things will only make things worse for the whole team. I have yet seen a single productive idea here, only what went wrong, ho - me o - my the sky is falling the negates are flying high and wide.

last night tells me that without peyton manning or al wilson, coach fulmer's teams are still average teams.

i would say that we had more to prove when you consider everyone was picking cal to win.

tell us what?

Tells us our defense is mediocre, abandoning runs instead of establishing runs after passing success equals to suicide.

Tells me that we really really miss Shaun Ellis, Darwin Walker, John Henderson, Albert Haynesworth, etc.

And the 4 and out in side the 5 yard line tells me we really don't have faith in our new found rushing capability.

The complete and utter lack of pressure on Longshore astounded me. I've become a bit accustomed to Chavis's D giving up the 3rd and longs, but I was shocked at how ineffective the defense was...and the missed tackles?...or should I say the flag football arm slaps some of our guys were trying instead of tackling......

This is all ive got to say..
ONCE OUR DEFENSIVE LINE IMPROVES, I GUARANTEE, AND I MEAN GUARANTEE THAT OUR WHOLE DEFENSE WILL IMPROVE VASTLY!! AND I MEAN THAT OUR D-LINE WILL HAVE TO SACK THE QB AT LEAST ONCE A GAME, AND GET AT LEAST 3 TACKLES FOR LOSSES. THATS NOT ASKING FOR TOO MUCH COMPARED TO UT'S PAST DEFENSES!! SO BASICALLY, IT ALL STARTS WITH OUR D-LINE! OUR LB'S WILL IMPROVE GREATLY ONCE THE D-LINE PUTS PRESSURE ON THE QB AND MAKES THE RB JUKE OUT OF THE BACKFIELD.. THAT WAY OUR LB'S CAN USE THEIR AWESOME ATHLETICISM AND BRING DOWN THE RB'S WITHIN JUST FIVE YARD.. OR USUALLY WITHIN JUST 3 YARDS! AND ONCE WE GET PRESSURE ON THE QB OUR SPEED-AHOLIC DB'S WILL GET SOME INTERCEPTIONS!!
SO YEA, IT WILL ALL, AND I MEAN ALL OUR DEFENSE WILL IMPROVE ONCE OUR D-LINE STEPS UP!!!

3rd and 1, or 4th and 1. Throw a dink pass, cuz you know you can't run for it.

Cuf: What's it look like down there, Coach?

BigUn: I'd say it's more than a football length, close to a durn foot.

Cut: So you're thinking pass, too?

BigUn: Uh'huh. :) little quick toss. We ain't got no grits up front, dontcha know.

Cut: I smell ya. I mean, I hear you.

You've got two weeks until we play you guys. Between now and then try to think of something funny. :good!:

Yeah, I had hoped that 2006 was an aberration, but apparently our D is trending downward too, consistent with many aspects of our program - other than recruiting thank God.

Just imagine our record if Fulmer couldn't recruit top athletes. Then again, if Fulmer couldn't recruit he would be long gone.
