I played in the Tampa rec league during residency, and we had a blast. It was a pretty competitive league, a great reason to hang out with good friends, and was compensated with free beer at Beef O'Brady's after games. Miss those times with friends.

My office had a team here a few years back, and it was great for the staff attitude -- having fun outside the workplace. I caught a bad hop with my chin while playing shortstop once that knocked me silly. I would never pitch.

I did. If you've ever played, you would know that men take their softball seriously...

The thing that drives me crazy about slow pitch is that they only take some parts of it seriously. For most serious softball players, especially the guys who play in tournaments every weekend, hustle is not one of those things. Last season, our team had a runner on first, and the batter hit a ground ball that went between the shortstops' legs, and the shortstop chased the ball 10 feet into the outfield and still turned the double play since both guys were basically walking on the basepaths. Very aggravating.

First season I played with my company team, I was lead off, first at bat of the season...

I hit a grounder to short stop and right as I stretched for first got beamed in the temple, but of course was safe because the throw was off line...

Stayed in and ended up scoring that inning. I didn't really see straight for days to come but stayed in the game of course. When I got back to the dug out guys were high fiving me and the last dude was like, "I woulda been knocked clean out by that lick you took..."

Good times.

Cool story, I know....

What's the name of your team?

Last year we were called BAMF and played at Karns. The general concensus amongst the team is that we need a new name for this year. Ideally we're trying to get some sort of sponsorship like many other teams have, but no luck on that front so far.

We had a team in our league a few years ago with a fairly creative name - Balls Deep.
