Hand-eye coordination is one of the, if the not the single most, important components of athleticism. Golf demands it. Softball merely requires you not be blind or without arms.

It appears you've never played the hot box when a 250 lb "fatty" swinging a 38 oz bat sends a ball your way with radar locked in on your 'nads. :)

Don't take my comments as any great endorsement of golf. Their purpose is purely to ridicule slow pitch softball.

Good reason enough to hang with the guys on a Tuesday night. Plus you get hang onto those glory days. My body didnt let me make it to 50.

After 30 years of golf I still suck. I faired much better at softball. I was always a better ball player than a golfer. I wish I had that swing in golf.

Which is why I would never, ever pitch...

I've pitched for 12 years and only been flat out drilled once. It was not fun.

Its a fun way to go out and weekend ball is pretty competitive and fun. That said, this year im moving to golf full time.

Slow Pitch Softball: The Sport For People Who Lack The Athleticism To Golf.

I played softball for about 8 years and would drive the ball into the gaps and hit alot of doubles and triples. I picked up golf and started hitting a few home runs. I guess swinging the golf club tought me to put my hips into my swing better.
I gave up softball after my daughter was born. It didn't pay enough to support my family if I got hurt and lost my job and I was way to competitive to jsut enjoy playing. I tried to get back into it a few years later and played 3 seasons(fall/spring/fall) before giving it up again.

I've also grown tired of the guys who think it is life and death and walk up to the plate with shaved/rolled bats who take subtle enjoyment in attempting to hurt guys.

I play both. Neither competitively. It's pure entertainment on both accords. Some guys like sitting at a bar, on the couch, or practicing origami in their parent’s basement.

I enjoy getting out for rec league softball during the week and golfing on the weekends.

I've played on the same softball team for 15 years. Good group of guys between the ages of 40 and 50. It's pretty fun to beat the young flat-bellies fresh out of college because they think swinging for the fence every pitch will win a game. You can see them coming too - everybody has a bat bag, sleeveless jerseys, batting gloves, and, the best of all, wearing baseball pants with a sliding pad. We usually run-rule those crews in the 5th inning.

Used to play while in the military. We played year round in a base league. The one in Jacksonville was huge and we had something like 25 teams or so. I would disagree with hat that it doesnt require skill. Fielding shots at third requires a bit of hand-eye imo.

You saying you prefer to catch?

I played catcher some in a leauge where you could steal once it crossed the plate. Only threw 2 guys out at 2nd and 1 at 3rd in 4 seasons though. I actually enjoyed it more than playing in the outfield once I got past the soreness of squatting that long the first game or so.

I find that fast pitch is easier to hit. When it's slow pitch I tend to think to much and strike out (embaressed)

that's funny. We had a guy in college come play for our intramural team and he played baseball for UT. He couldn't hit a slow pitch to save his life (struck out first game). Eventually got it after he spent some time in the batting cages

It's true. When I swing slow pitch I tend to wind up too much and try to hit homeruns. I can't help it. When it's moving fast you just react rather than think.

The most humbling league to watch in Knoxville is the 60+ league at Karns Sportspark.

I played with Chad LeGate (former UT player) right after he quit at UT. First pitch he swung and missed by a mile....second pitch he hit a mile.

This. When we played we always played 3 OF at the regular depth/position and the 4th we played as a deep IF/very shallow OF. Chasing balls all over the place in CF requires a little bit of athleticism, too. Pitching is fun. I don't know how many times I have reached out and caught a line drive with my bare hand. Hurts like a MFer.

I played for a few years and I am in the process of trying to get a team together. We always play for fun and don't ever get in the super competitive leagues. I can't stand the guys that think they are going to get called up to the Majors if they play well in slow pitch softball.
