That's not exactly true. They paid Tommy West $1 million plus per year, which was the most in C-USA at the time. What happened is, at the time when they should've been pushing to improve football facilities following the Deangelo Williams years, they thought they could muddle through while upgrading other facilities that also badly needed to be upgraded.
The new golf facility - first class. The new baseball park - first class. The Finch Center - first class. The new Hall of Fame/Athletic Offices - amazing. The Tiger Lane tailgating area outside the Liberty Bowl - awesome. So it's a misnomer to say they haven't put money into facilties the last few years. Now they're just getting around to football, which is about 5 years too late.
The depth of the program isn't an issue of commitment, facilities or fan support. It's about two bad coaching choices. 1) Keeping Tommy West too long 2) Hiring a running back's coach who was nothing more than a recruiter at LSU and who is in way over his head trying to run a Div. 1 program.
Those problems are fixable, and fairly quickly.
