Memphis Players

To understand why Memphis isn't "West TN" you would have needed to live there. Yes geographically it is...but culturally it isn't a great deal like rural WT...and nothing like the rest of TN. The love for everything Vol is different. Go to any dime store from Huntingdon to Halls and you will see nothing but UT stuff...don't see that in Memphis. Every athlete in rural West Tennessee dreams of wearing Orange...not in Memphis...although I wish it was so. Memphis is its own entity referred to as the "Mid South". You will likely hear much more about MS or AR news on Memphis stations than you even will about West TN. For those of you that have lived there am I not right?

You obviously didn't read that because your Attention Deficit has kicked in or you are dyslexic...so I tried to highlight it...as for your "moron" statement...does that include you as well?

UT has been down and therefore, you don't hear as much about them in Memphis. Ole Miss got a lot of pub because they had a year that was one of their bests in years.

In 1998, when we won the title, UT got a lot of pub in Memphis. Just like anything else, you will make the front pages when you win.

The last two years Memphis (within 25 mile radius) which would include Olive Branch has produced a grand total of 1 (5 star) and (1) 4 star. The last five years Memphis has produced a total of 2 (5 star) and 10 (4 star) recruits and that includes notable busts like Cam Clear, Jason Carr and Brian Kimbrow. In the same time period Atlanta has produced 81 (4 star or above). Memphis just doesn't have the talent it may have once had. The numbers don't lie.

So far for 2016 Memphis has 1 (4 star).

Seriously, you can't be that ignorant and make blanket statements like that.

He's back on the team.. So what happened?

Your first problem is comparing Atlanta to Memphis. Atlanta has about 5 times as more people in its metro area and even more in the Northern Georgia area. 6 million people. Even southern Georgia is the same distance from Knoxville than Memphis is.

You also fail to mention that Dan Williams, Greg Hardy, Cassius Vaughn, Dontari Poe, and Phillip Merling are all players who were less than 4 stars and play in the NFL. Poe was a two star drafted in the top 15, Williams was a first round pick, and I believe Merling was too, although I am not exactly sure of Merling's ties to Memphis.

Does everyting have to have a "point" with you? I mean are you trying to dig into something or do you think it has some sort of "hidden" agenda? My post was to ask how many Memphis players have made any kind of significant contribution on the field in the SEC for UT or the NFL...I mean geez what is your point? Oh and I left off Mark Studaway...he was a teammate of Carlton Peeple's at old Memphis South Side HS. Started for the Vols in the late 70's early 80's...played a few years in the NFL.
I didnt understand the point either. Were you dissing the place or wanting to know how many good players they were able to pull?

One search has Marlon Walls as Memphis...so I posted his name, then saw him cited as Olive Branch Miss, edited him out, went back to check and he is listed as Memphis on several sites. Anyone know for sure? Now I'm curious:)

First edit: Oops, Bad google search:blink: wrong player

I am good friends with his little brother and they are from Memphis. When Marlon came to UT his family moved to Knoxville as well and I played football with his younger brother.

I wasn't comparing Memphis to Atlanta as in Memphis should produce just as much talent. I was trying to point out that Atlanta is much more fertile recruiting ground. Not sure what distance to south Georgia has to do with my post.

I didn't "fail" to point out anything since my post was specific to the last 5 years.

It's more fertile because of more population..that's what Gee was saying..

Marlon Walls is a good dude. Talked to him several times around town and was always super nice and polite. Is he still in Knoxville?

Ok. I am not sure why you would provide the numbers for both Memphis and Atlanta if you weren't comparing them. Not sure the point then. Of course we should recruit Atlanta and Georgia because there are 6 million people within 3 hours of campus. My point about southern Georgia is that there are many more D1 prospects in the state other than Atlanta, and it's still within 5-6 hours. But that doesn't mean we should stop recruiting Memphis either.

Dan Williams, Dontari Poe, and Greg Hardy have all been drafted in the last 5 years. Again, they were 2 and 3 star players. Going by only the recruiting services doesn't tell the whole story.

Whitehaven is the school that has started to produce good talent. I know one of their assistants, and he says that they will continue to produce them. They have kids lining up to play for them, and they have started to coach them at the middle school. He says there are kids with unreal size in the 8th and 9th grades.

In the last few years, they have produced Darius Sims at Vandy, Dodson at OM (transferring), Ramadi Warren at Tulsa, Josh McMillon at Bama, and Donte Vaughn has his pick for 2016.

Gotta respect the Haven, it's the Melrose of the 90's right now here in M-Town

Never said we should stop recruiting Memphis. What I did say is that currently Memphis is not loaded with elite football talent like some people think.

I cannot understand the hate of all things Memphis people from east Tennessee seem to have. I think it has as much to do with race as anything.
