Wesley Witherspoon had surgery this morning to repair a right knee meniscal tear. Expected to be out for five weeks. Anticipated return Jan 15th.

Although sometimes injuries heal more rapidly than expected, I cant see any way possible he will be healthy enough to make the trip to Knoxville on the 5th.

When is Josh Bone coming back? He's pretty solid and we're gonna need all the help we can get

He will at the very least being limited. That's tough to hear though, I hope that he recovers 100%. Knee problems are so scary.

So when Tennessee beats the pants off the tiggers, you'll say it's because he wasn't playing....great.

A lot of us have been wondering why he has been very tentative lately on the floor. We got our answer today. He was leading the team in points and rebounds for the first three games and then tapered off. He suffered the injury during that third game and was trying to play through it.

hate to see that. he was one of my favorite players to watch. he's had a slightly disappointing season so far, right?

Depends on if it was a menisectomy or a meniscal repair. Two COMPLETELY different things (I'm a physical therapist). For the Vol fans--remember when Erik Ainge had his knee surgery? He ended up having a menisectomy vs. the repair. The difference is that repairs are usually for larger tears and in younger persons, when repaired, the rehab process is much longer (by 8 weeks or so), but with a menisectomy, as long as someone is pain-free and has good strength and full range of motion, they can conceivably return in 4-6 weeks. Easier for athletes to do this because of their lower extremity strength already there when going into surgery.

Meniscal repair. Its only partially torn and the doctors have been giving him MRIs and checking on it for the last two weeks. Its not season jeopardizing and he was planning on playing through it. the doctors have since said that surgery is the best option.

Will they use this opportunity to find out what is really in his backpack?

I still do not think that this knee injury is an excuse for him not playing up to expectations. His lack of leadership skills and unwillingness to play defense were there before the knee injury.

True, but some people arent cut out to be team leaders. Wesley is very passive but very good when he plays hard. He was playing up to expectations the first few games this season and this injury is only a delay. Hes got a vast skill set and will only get better. However, I do believe this injury could cause him to return to school next year. He is in line to graduate and his draft position has been strictly based on potential. Injuries are one thing that will cause the position to drop. See Dejuan Blair

We are going to beat Memphis, but I bet Pastner makes us think Wesley will be back for this game, just to mess with our game preparations. What we need to worry about is Will Barton, but I think Scotty or Cam can handle him.

Then why all the "doom and gloom" talk?

what have I said thats "doom and gloom"? Im just offering the story and clarifying some situations. If I wanted to be full of doom and gloom then I would haul my couch an the street and burn it.

Bottom line, Memphis was going to fall well below preseason expectations with or without Witherspoon. This just provides a temporary excuse.
