Wait a minute. You were among those who attack my credentials as a Tennessee fan because I don't genuflect at the mention of Pat Summitt, yet you can't figure out when to cheer during a UT-Memphis game? I count John Calipari as a personal friend, yet I hope his team plays absolutely miserably against the Vols. It appears my credentials aren't the ones that need analyzing.(MemphisVol @ Jan 15 said:I know a few are thinking about it, but I'm too big a Tiger & Vol fan both to figure out how I ought to dress... I suppose I could just wear blue under my big orange head, but that wouldn't solve the "trying not to go schizoid figuring out when and when-not to cheer" problem.
If someone came on this board and began comparing some Division 1-AA or D-2 coach's winning percentage to Fulmer's, the first thing everyone would do is bring up how much more difficult it is to win at the D-1 level. My comments about Summitt's record compared to Smith, Knight, etc., has nothing to do with gender. It has everything to do about making realistic comparisons between competitive environments. Summitt's records are impressive enough that they should be able to stand on their own. There's no reason to create comparisons that are nonsensical.(MemphisVol @ Jan 15 said:I didn't question your credentials as a fan of UT. I made fun of you for feeling compelled, without any obvious reason, to jump in and minimize women's sports and accomplishments compared to men.
I made fun of the misogynyst culture somebody has burdened you with, not your support of the Vols.
Give up that bad old "guys are better than girls, and we must criticize them whenever they get too uppity" culture. If you have the taste to be a Vol, you're obviously better than that.
And now, back to the actual subject......
I wouldn't read their recent performance as that much of a "down swing.' Winthrop won at Marquette and should have won at Alabama. The Tigers simply took care of business against East Carolina and SMU. We're really the only "name" opponent they'll play between now and the NCAA tournament. I'm confident we'll get their "A" game.(ChemEVol @ Jan 15 said:I am always for a Tennessee team doing well, but when that team is playing UT it is another story. I was hoping for a split in the LSU and Memphis games. Now that accomplishment is looking much more difficult. We are going to have to hope that Lofton, Watson, and Smith make up for their lack at LSU. A win at Memphis heading into the Florida game would be a huge confidence builder. Luckily, Memphis is in the middle of a down swing. Their overall performance has not been up to par since the Texas loss. Maybe they will continue with this lull against UT.

You have yet to produce a single quote from Dean Smith stating the women's game is as competitive as the men's game. Ask Bily Packer, Bob Knight, or the sainted John Ward what they think of the women's game. Geno Auriemma and Andy Landers have both mentioned that the continued growth in popularity of the women's game is dependent on increasing the number of teams that are competitive. Also, do you actually think men's coaches are going to publicly state their opinions, and risk having to deal with reactionaries like yourself, who simply emotionally disregard essential facts. Saying it is as easy to win in D-1 as it is in D-1AA is comparable to saying running a used car lot is the same as being the CEO of GM. I would love to invite you to come to Vegas during the summer AAU tournaments and tell guys like Calipari, Floyd, Huggins, and Self that there's no difference in the competitive environment between the men's and women's game. As for my "simple minded thinking," UT must really not be much of a school, given that I graduated cum laude from UT Law. If you had at any point been able to remove your emotions from the discussion, you would realize my point has nothing to do with gender. I would make the same point if someone were trying to tel me Jerry Yeagly was the greatest coach in NCAA history becuse of all the soccer championsips he won at Indiana. The competitive environment, media pressure, fan expectations, resources expended, etc., in football and men's basketball dwarfs that of any other college sports, men's or women's. There is a reason the salaries of football coaches and men's basketball coaches are exponentially higher than those of coaches in other sports. It isn't sexism, it's simply a recognition of the fact that their jobs are more difficult and pressure packed.(MemphisVol @ Jan 15 said:Dean Smith and a host of other professional coaches disagrees with the specific point on Summitt's greater accomplishment, and common sense disagrees with you on the general one.
It is not easier to win at the 1-AA level, unless you aren't coaching a 1-AA team. If both teams are 1-AA, then how does it take less to win? If both teams are female how does it take less to win? If both teams are made up of guys who feel compelled to speak up any time there's a suggestion that a female did better, how are they not all victims of backwards culture that they could overcome if they just tried?
Great coaching is about doing not just the best with what you've got, but even better. In terms of coaching- according to the professionals and logic- it's about the wins not the division you are in.
I'm going to go with the professionals, the folks who are trained to know and do the job, on this one. You are free to disagree, but since you are disagreeing with those who know best for no other apparent reason than to assert male superiority, you can't complain about being labeled as somebody who ignores the professionals to insert a gratuitous statement of male superiority... iow, to state a misogynyst position.
On the loyalty issue.... I just went back for another grad degree- to U of M. So, in addition to being born here (got to root for the home team), I've also got to root for all my alma mater's, future as well as past. In this case, that means that while I love the Vols best, I refuse to be forced into a simple-minded one-or-the-other position on anything, and so my best outcome is that nobody gets embarrassed.
It's easy being black&white or male-vs-female.. that's why they call it simple-minded thinking. It's simple. I'd rather not assert my preconceptions, let life be as messy as it comes, and deal with reality.
And if you think that's easy, just remember: the reality is, George W. Bush is president.
