Memphis is #428 on Forbes list.

MSU is #250 (still the lowest in the SEC).

Do people still consider the Big 12 a power conference?

JMO, but there are really only two power conferences anymore. Spoiler, Big 12 and the ACC are not in that group.

I’m guessing it’s backed by FEDEX and possibly AutoZone. Pretty lucrative offer and pretty embarrassing when a league turns it down and tells you “No thanks, we’re good.” Guessing they’ll run it by the ACC next but they are bigger academic snobs than the Big 12. Doubt they are interested in Memphis.

They’re certainly not a power conference anymore, but they’re easily way higher on the totem pole than the American, who’s in 5th place imo. So it’d still be a pretty big upgrade for Memphis, especially since the AAC's media deal is set to be reevaluated, and it will almost certainly lose a lot of money once it does, thanks to the loss of UCF, Cincinnati and Houston, who carried the conference financially.

FedEx tried to bankroll this. Bigger concern for Memphis is Fred Smith died after this offer was communicated.

I think Raj and the FedEx will need to get a firmer grip on the bottom line now with the founder out of the picture to keep their own jobs...

Memphis is begging for some relevance and hoping somehow to land in a decent conference. Highly doubt that will happen. Just so many negatives and not sure even one positive exist for them. Again, they simply aren’t on my radar.

They did take Lewville who is #179. But really didnt have much choice . WVU made more sense logistically but they are in the 200s.

If the Big 12 were the first ones they ran it by, then it means they’re not running it by the ACC (ie, they already determined there was no chance of the ACC accepting them on anything like this).
