Memphis coach

This rivalry will be short lived. It will not be renewed after it concludes in Nashville in two years. Memphis will be replaced by another major program. Even our basketball SID liked a tweet from Rob Lewis on that happening.

Why should we play a run down school and program from the worst city in Tennessee? I am glad it'll be short lived.

Rick Barnes and his players' character are well known. Penny is being a complete low life.

Not going to put down Penny, and don't have a problem with him defending his players, but he really should know when to zip it. Obviously he is a little butt hurt from that spanking the Vols gave him.

A decent squad of refs would have T'd up the floppers early on and put an end to the foolishness. They let it get completely out of hand and "lost the game," making it one of the most unwatchable contests I can remember. Without their complete incompetence, none of this would even be discussed.

IMHO, not very smart of the Memphis coach when he has to play the Vols at TBA next year and in Nashville the following year, where the crowd will be at least 75 percent Orange (and I believe that's conservative).

Fulmer should cancel the damn series indefinitely, until Memphis hires a normal coach... Penny is way out of bounds on his comments... we don't need the distraction cause we're on top now, it can only bring us down.

Let's finish out the 2 games and beat them like a drum both times. Improve the series record to 17-11 in our favor. THEN we can drop it.

Sadly I live in the Memphis area and the fans here are so delusional about Penny and bring Memphis BB back its crazy. He will get the players but I don't think he will be able to coach them up enough to win anything.

Although I like Geoff Caulkins, he's fueling the Penny legend. Disappointed he wasn't more critical of Hardaway's comments. About the closest he got to it was saying that he (Caulkins) didn't see any balled fists among the Vols players.

You realize UT only played Memphis once prior to 1988? Wonder what that record would be if they played during the 70s and 80s, when you know, Memphis was going to Final Fours and Sweet 16s on the reg. Barnes scheduled this 3 game series when Tubby was the coach. Would have been easy pickens of 3 wins and in roads to Memphis recruits. Hell, if UAB and Wichita State could beat Tubby out of Top 75-100 Memphis kids, surely Barnes could. Landscape has changed. You understand the hilarity of pooping on 2 runner up finishes when your school's greatest accomplishment is an Elite 8?

Oh, you’re referring to a time when Memphis was owned by Louisville in the Metro? Denny Crum killed the dreams of Memphis fans for years. I lived Memphis basketball for 30 years, in the last 40+ years they’ve had 3 coaches of any consequence. One got fired for cheating, one left when the water was getting hot and now resides in Lexington and one is still a legend (Bartow). Then you take the favorite son “Finch” and run him. Anfernee may have been a great player but he’ll be lucky to be in the same stratosphere with Tick Price as a coach.

In any event, the fact remains MSU has an all-time losing record in the series. So come on here and recite your canned stats all you want but some of us know both sides of the fence.

Flopping? It's called smart basketball to counteract a larger opponent that habitually lowers their shoulder and pushes off.

Why don't you go play in your own back yard. What kind of person hangs out non-stop in another team's forum and relentlessly challenges everything said? You LOST Saturday. A stand-up person wouldn't antagonize another team's fan base. That's just low. I'm sure your Memphis forum needs you now. GO AWAY!

Was just perusing the Memphis basketball forums and they are delusional. Apparently Barnes bad mouthed the crowd and Memphis' players, but no one can provide quotes or sources.

In post-game Barnes made some snide comments about the crowd. Which is fine. But then Barnes goes on to make additional snide comments about Penny's veracity and the Memphis basketball players. It's almost like Barnes planned to make Penny his ***** but Penny turned the tables on him:)

Yep, Barnes went out of his way to downplay the Memphis crowd and talked down to Penny and the Memphis players. This was by design in my opinion and it backfired on him

Can anyone tell me what they are referring to?

It's in a story posted on the main page of ESPN. Just read it. Really pathetic and disgusting verbal display by a supposed adult who is paid a lot of money by the University of Memphis to mold the characters of young men.

Doing a good job of character moulding it appears.

Memphis fans twist things to fit their narrative. Folks in Memphis love playing the “Memphis v. Errbody” game. Barnes didn’t say anything bad about the crowd, the atmosphere, or the arena. It’s just a few Memphis fans talking out of their ass.

I was running errands for my mother in Memphis and caught most of the game on the radio (WUMR.) At the end one announcer said something like “for the second game in a row, the referees are going to have to run off the court.”

Maybe after a few more games, the fans might start to realize that it’s their team, not the opponents, who are earning the whistles.

I found myself in a bar on the Square in Oxford, MS, a couple of years ago and they had a big, beer-sponsored poster with that year's Ole Miss football schedule on the wall. It listed "Memphis State," which for some reason drives Tiger High fans nuts -- almost as nuts as "Tiger High."
Of course, this was, what, about 20 years after Tiger High changed its name, in a futile effort to make Tiger High sound a little more "elite." I knew exactly what Ole Miss was doing and for once in my life, I had to give Ole Miss some credit for gigging a rival in a very understated, yet very effective way. LOL!

Flopping? It's called smart basketball to counteract a larger opponent that habitually lowers their shoulder and pushes off.

Really? Here's what Wikipedia says about flopping:
"In basketball, a flop is an intentional fall by a player after little or no physical contact by an opposing player in order to draw a personal foul call by an official against the opponent. The move is sometimes called acting, as in "acting as if he was fouled". Because it is inherently designed to deceive the official, flopping is generally considered to be unsportsmanlike."

Sounds about right for Tiger High. And its fans are too, uh, cerebrally challenged, to recognize that most of the basketball world doesn't see it as "smart basketball."

Aww, let the Tiger High fan hang around. He's kinda funny. He doesn't realize how silly he is.
