Mel Tucker

Price of doing business just went up. Mel Tucker signed a 10 yr, $90 million extension. Pretty good work after getting obliterated by Ohio State. This ain’t Nick Saban we’re talking about. Just crazy.
Absolutely nuts! Makes ya wonder how much better he would’ve done than Pruitt. But 10 mil a year for Mich State! Absolutely crazy

Boy he really hit the lottery!...I don't think he is anywhere good enough for that kind of money but hey got to give him props for the season he's had....Except that last game...My god I could throw for 300 yards on that pass defense....Michigan St is committed I just hope it doesn't bite them in the a$$ later on...Thats one hell of a buyout!

Sounds like they had a billionaire booster put up a lot of the money.

Mel Tucker showed his true colors when he was at Colorado. Before long, those chickens will come home to roost.

MSU just paid 90 million for a liar. Karma will catch up to him, and while it won't cost MSU the full 90 mil when they get rid of him...and they will...it will set them back a nice chunk of change, and then they'll have to clean up the mess he leaves behind. My prediction would be that MSU won't sniff the CFP, or even the B10 Championship, with Mel Tucker in East Lansing.

In the end, MSU laid out 90 million dollars to all but guarantee that they won't be a factor in the CFP for the next 10 years. They could have got Butch Jones a lot cheaper.

What did he do at Colorado?

He's a POS bc he chose to better his lot in life? Hope you never take a better job. Did Colorado offer to meet the terms of his offer before this one? I love how this sort of judgement is only reserved for sports coaches. So stupid.

If Michigan State comes calling and you are at Colorado, you take that job regardless of how long you’ve been in Boulder

So from what I read (vfh, this is for you as well), Mel had agreed to take the MSU job, but said nothing (at that point) to the Colorado admin. He even went out to a meeting of UC alums/boosters at a golf club, where he gave a talk so lame that some of those who were there wondered if something wasn't going on with him. When he announced he was leaving (the next day?), it became apparent that he had already agreed to take the MSU job, but had held that back from UC while he was still out hyping the UC Football program.

I think Sports Illustrated did the article. It's out there somewhere; should be easy to find.

Anyhow, it stank to me of the same crap Kiffin & Orgeron pulled here, so it just doesn't sit well with me. I think MSU overpaid for Tucker (not that I really care); and I think if or when his star fades in East Lansing, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him sneak out of MSU the same way he did at UC. Zebras can't change their stripes, and all that.

In any event, he's a rich man, so I doubt he'll lose any sleep over my opinion of him.

Go Vols.

So sounds like the rub here is that Tucker worked on getting a deal done while still doing his current job all while at a stepping stone job.

Regarding his contract, Tucker has surprised everyone at Sparty given how quick he was able to transition from Dantonio and get back to uptrend. At end of the day, we are in a point and status of college football that the “pay” is irrelevant. The perceived over paying doesn’t matter these days. Especially in Sparty as they haven’t had to pay buyouts or deplete their AD reserves as Dantonio was there for a lifetime.

I don’t think the price tag is crazy for Michigan state considering the tenure their coaches have had. Dantonio and Izzo were there for long time respectively. While the price tag is shocking to some, Michigan State obviously wanted to keep Tucker from even testing the waters. He would be a good consolation hire if the Florida and LSU jobs failed to hire their top targets. I would find it hard for LSU, Florida, or even USC to have fan bases to find that hiring Tucker would have been a letdown if it came to it

Great point, still a lot of money though!
