Medical question re: Inky Johnson

That is grown man, still giving his all for TENNESSEE . He is inspirational. A role model to is all. I was only somewhat familiar with his injury, the respect I have for him has increased, but I fear there is no level that would be enough. VFL .... God bless you!

Actual he did tear blood vessels....as a matter of fact he nearly bled to death. He had a football sized hematoma before he ever left the playing field. Fulmer talked about how scary it was because they thought they were going to lose him.
At one point they nearly took the arm because of the damage to the proximal blood vessels feeding the arm.

I guess you have inside info, but the injury obviously spared the major vessels to the arm, which are located much deeper than the brachial plexus nerves. You can get a hematoma from a more superficial injury. His arm is apparently still well perfused, giving hope to future nerve reconstruction, which has already been mentioned.

The video is blurry and fast... I can't figure out how his right arm was hurt so badly. He glanced off to the right of the receiver... it seems like his left arm would have taken the blow. He fell to the turf on his right arm, but that didn't seem like a huge impact. Maybe the receiver's helmet collided with IJ's right shoulder ???

Easier to buy shirts

Am I the only one that chuckled at this? Yes it obvious that Inky is a VFL and it's terrible what happened. But that doesn't mean that you can't have a sense of humor. Not making an obvious joke like that means that you are treating the person different than someone who had both working limbs. Don't you think Inky would want to be treated the same?

And you guys are crazy if you think that some of his friends and previous teammates havnt made a joke about it at least once to his face. AND he probably liked it. Some people are too sensitive.

I liked the balance answer too. sounds like special ed has a sense of humor too. I could be wrong though.

It's still a mystery to me how that impact did so much damage. Part of wearing shoulder pads is diffusing the collision force over a greater surface area. Instead, all that force was concentrated at the shoulder joint.
The forces at play had to be tremendous. Inky was maybe 170 pds soaking wet.

I know Ink personally. He could have regained some use of the arm if he elected a procedure. But, they would have had to take material from his other arm, and left that side weak as well. He elected to not do that. And yes, doctors were able to repair vascular damage but not nerve damage. However, future advances could change that. Amputating the arm would certainly eliminate that possibility, even though chances are remote.

Wow. Really? That's as sorry as anything I've ever seen posted here. The kid almost died on our football field (without people there knowing what to do, he would have), and using his injury as the butt of your joke makes me sick. That's just me though.

My bad. Just now read story about him as not living in Ktown I was unaware of his story. Inky's story is inspirational.

Nerves, yes. Blood vessels, no.

As to the OP, I believe most people would choose to keep their natural arm, even if non-functional. I'm not a neurosurgeon, but I don't think he would be able to control a prosthesis with the extent of his brachial plexus injury, anyway.

The statement regarding no damage to blood vessels is incorrect. There is a video of Inky describing his injury. It is also stated in his book (which is a GREAT read BTW) that he ruptured his right subclavian artery. He has been quoted as saying that doctors said "this guy is about to lose his life".

The following quote is taken from an article which can be read here: Eric Berry and the No. 29: A Salute to Inky Johnson

After leaving the field on a stretcher, Johnson was taken to the hospital and soon learned the severity of his injury.

“I had busted a subclavian artery in my chest and I was bleeding internally,” Johnson said. “They had to take the main vein out of my left leg, plug it into my chest in order to save my life and that's when they discovered I had nerve damage in my right shoulder."

That nerve damage would lead to Johnson’s right arm being paralyzed.

Well if I would have been in his place, I would have just liked to be treated as a common man, but I wouldn't like someone making fun of my arm! talk to me and everything, but when you make fun of my arm, you bring some bad memories. The injury took his dream away of being a professional football player. I am pretty sure he will prefer to be a football player than a motivational speaker.
and I am pretty sure all his friends know what his arm means to him, and most of them are very considerate about it.
The joke was in bad taste because we the people, who don't have that disability will never understand what he went through!

Inky said specifically "brachial plexus" in the video on page 2. Is it possible that he had BOTH injuries?

Yes, he did have BOTH injuries (ruptured subclavian artery AND torn brachial plexus). My point was in correction of the poster who stated Inky had no vascular damage saying "Nerves, yes. Blood vessels, no."

**I have edited my original post to make it more clear that I am talking about the blood vessel injury.
