Meaningless Game Thought

That would be the resident morons. This game means zip, win or lose.
NO game, bowl or regular season, means zip, win or lose -- True
ANY bowl game means millions of dollars -- Also true
ANY bowl game means more practice time -- Also true
A bowl win can aid recruiting -- True
A bowl win can boost donations and increased NIL resources -- True
A bowl win can further motivate players' prep (diet, weight room, etc.) for spring practice -- True
A bowl loss can motivate players to work harder in preparation for spring practice -- Also true

Like most things in life, it is what each individual chooses to make of it.

But to attach the importance and meaning of a college football season to only one goal, a national championship, is IMHO foolhardy, self-destructive for fans and for smaller college programs, and is sure to destroy the overall popularity of college football from August to January.

Meaningless = no implications to the National Championship

This is a game that any true Volunteer fan wants to win.

I think it’s dumb for grown adults to get upset when a young man makes a decision that they believe is best for their family and themselves.

If Tennessee loses their "meaningless" bowl game, wonder how many more coaches need to be fired.

None. Like you said, it's meaningless in the big scheme of things. As a Vol fan I want UT to win, but if they don't, the only downside is (maybe) recruiting, and Heupel's W-L record.

Meanwhile, back at the Ranch, what we might see in this game is why we so desperately need a new S&C Coach...

...as well as a new FG kicker.

I’d rather see us win than lose, but it’s the least important game of the season . . . by far. It’s not even going to be the same team that played most of the year.

So true! If playing for a national championship is the only meaningful game or playing for a chance to win a national championship is the only regular season game with meaning, Tennessee has had one meaningful season in the last 74 years. If you are a competitor, there are no meaningless games. I would never want a team mate that didn’t care whether we won or not.

The way I look at it:

It means as much as any other game to some of us. Happiness is a state of mind, after all.

Most of us couldn’t care less about your inheritance or your favorite memory. On the other hand, most of us would have enough sense to realize that the world doesn’t revolve around us.

Those who keep preaching the meaninglessness of this or that are pretty low, in my opinion. This is a UT sports forum and be thoughtful enough to let others be Tennessee fans. I don’t stop being a fan around others’ misery.

Didn’t say I didn’t want them to make a bowl. Making a bowl means you had a decent (not great) season. And I like to see them win but it won’t twist me in knots if we lose a bowl game where our best WR and three best defensive players have opted out. Sorry, it’s just not.

As far as what you listed, some of that is true. However, generating “millions of dollars” is questionable after the school has to pay expenses and ticket guarantees if they don’t sell their allotment. (UT might actually be one of the few that will do that since it’s in Nashville). I think ESPN is the only one making real money off these things now.

Bowl influence on recruiting is doubtful. Don’t know many recruits that would care. Nowadays it’s all about the money and PT.

I also question whether that 10 to 15 extra practices mean much when players are working out 12 months a year and spring practice is right around the corner. Might help a little but the overall effect is overblown. It’s darn sure not going to help the defense learn the new system that Knowles is going to put in.

I'll be watching the game from the sidelines with 1/3 of our team.

I'm not going to consider the game meaningful if the players that got us here don't consider it meaningful.

its just an exhibition game like the Pro Bowl. nothing more.
