McStrike

I try not to get fast food very often, but when I do, I feel like my order is wrong a disproportionate number of times.

MercyPercy smash.

A man and wife both working with one or two kids.

They could provide for themselves until a few years ago.

still can but why does your simple life definition have to include kids or a spouse? Those aren't necessities in life. A person wishing to live a simple life on a low paying job could very well do that. When they decide to take that simple life to another level then they should be responsible for the funding

out of college my first job started out basically at $10-12/hr until I proved that I knew enough to move up. I had zero problem living comfortably on that

his argument is silly and sets up a false dilemma.

So it matters when the person is out of high school? I worked full time in the summer...still didn't make enough to support me.

No, I don't think working 40 hours entitles someone enough money to support the full lifestyle they want. Working in the drive through is not a career. It's not ever going to pay for a decent lifestyle. There's a long list of job choices that fit into the same category.

You could afford to pay your employees a good wage because they delivered more value to your business than they cost you.

Just because their ****ty, dead end job doesn't pay their bills doesn't mean I have to stop complaining about welfare. Or their out of wedlock children they brought into a life of poverty. Even raising the mandatory wages of the french fry fryer isn't going to make that problem go away.

You may not stop complaining about welfare, that will not stop it from continuing to escalate. We either pay more in wages or we will continue to pay more and more in government assistance.

I grew up during a different time, I realize I am getting out of touch in todays world. We had low wage jobs but those low wage jobs did pay enough to live. With the high cost of living today, those low wage jobs no longer provide a living. This thread is concerning d as t food, however there are many fields that reply on non skill low wage workers. Always has been always will be. Shall all of those workers have to rely on assistance to survive?

Gramps in all fairness, you can raise the wages. Products will simply go up in price.

If they would lower some of the regulations on said products so costs go down then it might work.

You need to get out more. People all over this country do that.

A husband that works construction...a wife who is a receptionist. Kids who go to school.

It still happens.

Most construction jobs are not low wage jobs. Many of them pay well 2 to 4 times minimum wage.

Pay more wages = more costs = prices go up. What's the net these unskilled workers will see?

They need to get better jobs. It's that simple. Their future and quality of life shouldn't be left up to me.

Times are changing, but the soda jerk and gas pumper were not earning a "living wage" decades ago. The biggest difference is the person in the job no longer has to shoulder the consequences of their life choices. Now those who employ them or earn more than them get the blame.

Fast food is disgusting (I make an exception for In N' Out Burger).

I'll go to chick-fil-a and hardees sometimes, the food there isn't quite as disgusting as the rest.

Though I admit when I'm drunk, I may start to crave krystals. I don't even know if you guys have krystals.

Taco Bell ftw.

That's the point. There's something seriously wrong if you are in a min wage job for more than six months.

Just show up on time for six months in fast food and they'll make you an assistant manager.

Gut grenades...used to stuff myself on those when I was at UTK. Saw one in the Atlanta airport this week. Kind of got a craving.

I agree with that OB. Something has to give, if not we are headed into bankruptcy. If cost of living continues to increase, wages stay the same we will see more and more go onto government assistance. It is a shame that our government and employers make it better for non skilled workers to sit on their azz and make more than they can by working a low wage job. That pisses me off with the government for trying to give everyone a life they do not require and it pisses me off the employers do not pay their employees enough to live. If they can't they need to close their doors and the government needs to cut back on all the darn handsouts. Just an old man's opiinion.

I beg to differ. My dad owned a few service (gas) stations back in the 60'sand 70's. He did not work high school kids. He worked family men.. they earned enough to live a fairly good life. That I know to be fact. Say what you want , the truth is yes low wage workers could raise a family without assistance, that is fact.

What was the average union wage back then?
What did the average home and car cost back then?
College costs? Of course people didn't have to go to college to be successful back then.
Insurance costs?
Medical?
On and on. Not to mention regulations placed on business.

It should be drummed into kids heads at an early age to make good decisions, as most "family" people making minimum wage have made very poor ones.

You're just being hard headed now.

They were still what one would consider poor. Just because govt assistance is widely available today doesn't change that.

A person CAN live off of minimum wage. That person is just poor.
