McNeil was "comfortable just showing up for the games"

Very telling article. Great to see the change in attitude. It WILL translate to the field. GO VOLS

Not in the least bit surprising. The Fired Coach and the Skoal Patrol were comfortable just to show up when paychecks were being passed out, so why would we expect the players to think differently?

I remember one of the posters that went to the early morning workouts back in the winter said McNeill spent the whole time riding an exercise bike and complaining. That definitely worried me since he should be a team leader. It sounds like his attitude has done a complete 180. Great to hear.

Who's the Skoal Patrol?

I swear, in some respects I'm even more pissed off at the last regime now than I was last November, if possible. I had felt like they were on cruise control, but we keep getting more clarity on the extent to which the apathy had set in.

Nice to hear about the weight gain too. He is one of those players that has lost weight throughout the season each year so he needs to come in as big as possible with as much muscle vs. fat weight as possible. If he can compete in the SEC @ 260 and be serviceable, I have to believe that 290 and in shape will put him closer to the top as far as centers go.

Greg Adkins was their leader.

Were they really that stupid or was it more laziness? From the outside looking in it seemed that we had 4-day a week coaches where everyone else had 8-day a week coaches.

It is my opinion that Adkins' stupidity was only outweighed by his laziness.

I read this and cannot help but wonder if a staff like Kiffin's had been here earlier, how many of our OL's would've been so much better! Guys like Michael Munoz and Albert Toena would've probably been shoe in NFL draftees.

Wasn't this the main criticism of Fulmer. He had his favorites, played them, and once they earned the job, they kept it. Kiffin putting all spots up for grabs, that along will make the roster better,. Competition breeds increase in skills.

This staff would never have recruited either of those guys.

?? Why not? I thought Munoz was highly touted coming out of high school. Toena was a mountain! I think with the right guidance he could've been a hell of an offensive tackle.

Munoz was soft and Toeina was stupid. Neither quality plays well with this staff.

One thing I've always had a hard time getting my arms around was why fulmer brought in such lousy o-line coaches, first Jimmy Ray Stephens, then Adkins. You'd think he would have at least done something about the drop off in that area.

McNeil's shoulders didn't bother him when he threw the flower pot thru his girlfriend's window last year! Wonder if he was one of the UT players Brandon Spikes said quit trying during the Florida game last year. Anyway, good to see he's got his stuff together now.

Go figure. When you are forced to (chuckle) work like heck in practice, you get better.
When you are able to "just show up", you don't. Sounds like Kiffin and company are on to something. Shame Phil never figured this out.

Munoz dealt with a number of surgeries in his career and continued playing well. Not sure how that made him soft.

Toeina was a bit crazy. I think he was the guy that slammed his helmet once we lost to Vandy.

I'm with you man...

There were certainly signs of it...but as die-hard Vol fans we wanted to believe what the coaches we grew to love and respect told us in their interviews...the stuff about hard work, commitment to the weight room, etc.

But more and more keeps coming out to prove that it was all a bunch of crap...

I've said it before but the past 8 months has pretty much completely reversed my opinion of the previous staff

Yeah, I think Munoz was one of those kids that would've flourished in Kiffin's system. He had the pedigree, he had the physical tools. He just wasn't pushed like he should've been.

Remember, even in Coach Fulmer's system Munoz was a freshmen all american, started all 4 years at UT, was co-captain his junior and senior year, and was a consensus all american his senior year. I just cannot imagine how much more Kiffin's staff could've gotten out of him.

Not trying to knock the guy, but he achieved most of what he did on name alone. He was not All-American O-line material.

Exactly. Munoz making the All American team his senior year was a bigger travesty than Gino Toretta winning the Heisman.

Yeah...how many AA O-linemen do you know that go undrafted?

I know it's happened rarely at other positions...but I'm not aware of any OL's pulling that feat
