McElwain, the Gator Dooley equivalent?

I guess it remains to be seen. I remember UF players talking about UT quitting during the Fulmer years.
When? During the 95 game (led by 16, then got stormed under with 48 straight points), which could be seen as quitting. Or maybe the 2007 game (had the ball with a chance to tie it at 28 all until Arian Fumble fumbled it and they returned it for a two score lead). The other Florida games between those two didn't really present an opportunity to "quit". Unless I missed a year somehow...

96 we came back (35-0 to 35-29) but not enough.
97 we fought hard but pick 6 cost us, as well as 3rd & Chavis. 33-21.
98 next.
99 Alex Brown gate, but game went to the wire.
00 Gaffney. 27-23
01 next.
02 didn't play well but didn't quit. Fumbled repeatedly, 30-13.
03 road win.
04 home win.
05 lost 16-7, qb controversy before & after. 16-7.
06 led game til we blew it, but didn't quit. 21-20.

Interested to know which games Florida players thought we quit while playing against Florida under Fulmer.

McElwain is a very good coach. I loved his Interview after the loss, no BS and he was still calm and collected with a little humor.

I agree with this^

Way better coach than Dooley in all areas. He has proved to be a good x's and o's coach and good with scheme and game prep. Heck a no name transfer back up qb was playing lights out in a loud and hostile environment against us. Actually shredded our D for the 1st half. The better team just started clicking and Shoop earned his pay.

He seems to really care for his players (way unlike Dooley) and won the East not only in his 1st year but in a year when UF should've had a down year.

He shouldn't let the players run wild and run their mouths like he has even if they could've backed it up but if he uses this azz whoopin as a teaching tool and locks them in (and shuts them up) UF could prove to be dangerous the remainder of the season.

McElwain won the east division and 10 games in year one at Florida. After 1 1/3 seasons, he already has pretty much as wins (14 vs 13) as Dooley had in 3.....is this a serious question?

A LOT of schools (hello Georgia and LSU) are about to have their paradigms of what a successful season is really tested for the first time in a LONG time. They are too spoiled to appreciate what they had....

going to be absolutely hilarious when Richt finishes the season with more wins at Miami than Smart at UGA.

this is what makes the Dooley comparison valid. guy was great in front of a mic. terrible everywhere else.

the difference between the two could just wind up being talent levels. that said,i think overall CJM is a pretty good coach...but again, he's now on a very short list of people that have been out coached by CBJ and co. hopefully that's a start of a new trend.

This thread is hilarious, because it's amazing how quickly opinions change. I guarantee if we don't make that huge comeback Saturday everyone would be on here talking about how great Mac is and how even with a backup QB and no running game they still managed to beat us, blah blah blah.

Mac is nowhere near Dooley level. He has lost one game this year and has a defense that can get them to 9-3/10-2 quite easily. I think people need to pump the brakes.

There will never be a coach in the SEC as inept as Dooley. And, the main reason for that is, there will never be a worse AD than Mike Hamilton. Hamilton single handedly destroyed the men's Athletic Dept and UT is just now beginning to come out of the fog he placed over East Tennessee. And, he did it in a very short period of time.

Well....to be fair Hamilton did give us the best years in UT Basketball HISTORY by hiring Bruce Pearl. And then he mucked it up and fired him instead of waiting out the show cause.

Don't get me wrong, Rick Barnes is a classy and awesome coach and I'm glad to have him now, but I would still take Bruce Pearl. He is recruiting like a madman at Auburn while our recruiting under Barnes is struggling. Pearl will eventually get it turned around down there which is as remarkable, if not more so, as what he did in Tennessee.

Good thread with rational responses to an otherwise irrational premise by the OP.

Dooley isn't on the same planet as McElwain. Period.

I'm sure it's been rehashed to death here, but Saturday's game would have been much worse if not for all the drops you guys had in the first half. Shoop figured out Appleby's limitations and made excellent adjustments at the half.

Doesn't hurt to read it from a gator though. :salute:
Appreciate your level head on this board.

Yeah he is a far better coach than Dooley- that's for sure. I just think he doesn't teach (or practice) mental toughness. We can all agree the reason the were blown out by Michigan last year was that they packed it in after the loss to bama. And you could even see mental weakness in CJM after we rolled off five TDs. He packed it in as well

.

Bruce Pearl fell in Tennessee's lap when Ernie Grunfeld set up this hiring. Hamilton never had control nor the respect of any of the coaches and Pearl got out of control in his recruiting. Several big money boosters and SEC higher ups were upset with Bruce and Hamilton allowed him to be set up in the NCAA investigation so he could be fired. Pearl was his own worst enemy but none of this would have ever happened on Doug Dickey's watch.

In the meantime, Hamilton destroyed the football program, the track program, and the baseball program with some of the worst hires in NCAA history. Hamilton could not have done more harm if his main goal had been to intentionally destroy the Tennessee athletic department.

Back to the subject of the thread: Opinions on McIllwain would be a lot different if Grier had not been suspended and subsequently left the program.
