McElroy cals out Vols fans

I looked at a pic before kickoff. That wasn't 95k, more like 80k. Wouldnt be surprised if it was closer to 75k in reality. Lots of open space between seats, plenty of upper sections looked empty. McElroy just looking to poke the bear. Whatever works for him I suppose, he wants people (read: TN fans) talking about HIM not the actions of our fans. Taking cheap shots at a fanbase that is clearly angry at their HC and showing their disapproval the best way they can (by not filling up the stadium) is just how its done in this business.

McElroy is trying to make a point about our fans loyalty...truth is, less fans showing up has nothing to do with us not supporting the team, it has EVERYTHING to do with fans not supporting the coach and in particular the AD.

The fact that 20 of you chumps liked this is a little concerning...it goes without saying that we support the team. It's just we can't show our disapproval of the coach/AD without making tickets prices slump.

McElroy can go fly a kite.

“And to abandon them in a moment of need is flat out embarrassing. Anyone associated with the #EmptyNeyland trend … you failed, by the way, because 95,000 plus showed up,” McElroy continued. “So congrats, and a standing ovation to those that were there to support their team. But for those associated with the ‘Empty Neyland,’ come at me, because you are a disgrace to your fan base, and you are a disgrace to your team.”

Strong words there from the former Alabama quarterback.

He is correct.

Somebody needs to ask this Bamtard how many other fanbases would put 70k plus in the stands for team that's winless in the SEC.

Hell, half of Bama would be a wasteland if they had similar results.

Our players aren't three year olds. They know full well why that stadium isn't full. Stop insulting their collective intelligence.

If we feel that we have (or even should have) the ability to affect change in our athletic program, then I don't see how we can pretend like we have zero responsibilty in the product on the field.

I think a lot of people view UT athletics as a company whereas I like to think of it more as a sovereign state. That is to say that it is unlikely for us (a lot of us, anyways) to jump ship and cheer for a new school simply because another school puts a better product on the field. Similiarly, most people wouldn't leave their native country under anything less than the most severe conditions. Most commonly, life threatening conditions. It's nothing like swapping to Android because Apple sh*t the bed on the next iPhone.

We're not consumers in this scenario. We're citizens of Vol Nation, and as citizens, we should (and do) hold a certain degree of responsibility. Thus, we can't be entitled to excellency without a shred of responsibility.

Oh and to clarify, I mean the program, not this website.

We do have good fans but most on here seem to be Emptyheads. Emotional wrecks that harm the program for the sake of your own emotions.

I think he's right.

Through thick and thin, right? Through thick and thin. Yeah, be unhappy if the program's not going in the right direction. But don't walk out on your team. Don't disengage. Don't give up. Through thick and thin.

Glad he called them out.

The problem is the AD and boosters. that is the only way to send any message. For them to actually listen and change things is to cut off their money and to embarrass them on TV with an empty stadium.

Plus UT fans are fed up with Bad hires that UT makes in the majority of the teams, in the Athletic Dept. then tell is that everything is fine to keep sending money for a weak product.

Let's just keep hiring cheap coaches and then pay them not to coach, then wonder why the Athletic Dept. has no money or maybe raise ticket prices to cover the continued ineptitude. Pay the dang 7 or 8 million a year to a coach that will win instead of 3 or 4 million a year to 2 or 3 fired coaches.

Since 2005 UT has went thru 4 coaches have a combine 86-74 overall record and an SEC record of 40-64 and working on their 7th losing season in the last 13 years. The years us old folks call the Dark Ages from 1973-1985 also 13 years it was 2 coaches and they had a combine record of 88-57-7 and an SEC of 38-38-2 which goes to show that since Mike Hamilton took over UT has had a noted lack of success of hiring and a huge success at paying coaches to not coach and nothing I have seen from Currie in all his time at 2 schools says it will change

There will never be a time I listen to an ex-Bama player

No one forces you to spend the money. Stop doing so, and someone else will take your tickets.

Well since apparently you don’t have tickets or donate to the University for the privilege of buying season tickets. Go spend some of your hard earned money at UTTix.com plenty seats available for LSU and Vandy.

Some people criticizing McElroy for his opinion based on his NFL career or lack thereof......good grief. Embarrassing.

That'll be the day when I give any thought whatsoever to anything Greg McElroy says lol

Actually from what I have heard from him, he is a pretty good analyst and is fair. So I have no problem with him or his sidekick. They are both better than PF.:hi:

I’m not paying or donating anymore to watch the second winningest program in SEC bungle it’s way winless season and not beat a SECW opponent the last seven years because of mismanagement by the AD and University. There is no excuse for it. None.

I’m glad somebody that may not get to go to games can go in my stead. I genuinely think that is awesome for the fans. But I’m reserving myself to being a casual fan until this gets fixed. McElroy can take his pompous Bama attitude and shove it.

AGAIN, I am not defending the 'Empty Neyland' movement, which was pretty much a bust. I'm just sick of defending everybody EXCEPT the fans, who fund this whole freaking circus.

Everybody gets an apologist, except the guy who spends his money on sub-par entertainment, while all the while everybody else has something to gain, including sometimes getting rich.

I don' think that's true, Don. Haven't seen many apologists for Butch in the media lately. They all seem busy lining up to criticize him, in advance even, for burning McBride's red shirt. Right?

Truth is, the Tennessee fan base gets a lot of media support (and pandering).

So the "we're the media's victims" angle isn't working for me.

p.s. Plus, McElroy wasn't attacking Tennessee fans. He was attacking people who tried to #EmptyNeyland.

No One Ever said:
Yeah, be unhappy if the program's not going in the right direction. But don't do anything that might actually get a decision-maker's attention.
fyp.

By the way, I have chosen to make my displeasure with the football team in its current incarnation abundantly clear in a different way -

I haven't been to a tennis match all year.

There are far better ways to get the AD and administration's attention than skipping a football game (or tennis match, heh). As Munster points out:
Better ways to show displeasure, like writing the AD and telling him donations stop until a change is made.

I mean, think about it. If you, one person, skip a game...the AD and university leadership probably couldn't even pick out the seat you're not occupying, with binoculars, even if someone told them you weren't there, and where to look. Your absence is as much of a NON-message as you can send. Heck, even if 10,000 people join in, that's slighly noticeable, but not dramatic. I've seen Neyland at 90,000 and Neyland at 102,455, and the difference just isn't that striking.

Same thing financially. All the high $-value seats in the stadium have already been sold. The only financial impact non-attendance could have would be on the single-game tickets. Well, the profits from those are tiny compared to the profit already made from the season tickets and more expensive seats and boxes. It's like how the business class seats on a commercial flight are where over half the profit is, even though they're only 5-10% of the seats. Financially, telling a season ticket holder not to go to the game is a wash. Telling a non-season ticket holder not to go impacts Stub Hub, but UT not so much.

It's just a terrible way of sending a message.

But if you send a letter to the AD, someone in the AD's office is going to open that letter and actually read it. They may promptly discard it, but at least someone heard your message. Automatically far better than that empty seat no one noticed.

And if the AD gets 10,000 letters, if his mail box is overwhelmed, if the post office has to hire temporary staff to handle the deluge, that's going to make a ripple all over campus. 10,000 letters weigh about 600 pounds and can fill a small room. The physical imposition of them alone sends a dramatic message, and that's before the staff even start opening them and reading what they say.

So. You want to send a message. Then get a pen and paper and, literally, send a message. Far more effective.

But then, back to basics. Like...Loyalty.

Never give up on the team, never walk out, never turn your back. Through thick and thin.
