I can't stand mediocrity, but we have to give this coach and his staff more than 20 games before pronouncing him an utter failure.

Please look at the facts first. We are currently 77 scholarship players, and are almost completely led by players with 20 games (or less) experience at the major college level. Even our Juco saviors are not exactly there at this point.

What I saw on the ESPNU show was that our coaches are on top of every detail - they know what they want to see from these guys. But the speed of the game can overwhelm players until you've been out there in the fire. For every J Clowney, J Jones or Lattimore, there are 10 guys you'd rather redshirt if you had your choice. We lose Janzen and have to plug in Randolph, Coleman or Lanier. We lose Lathers and are playing 2 true freshman LBs. Please tell me of any true Freshmen LBs that ever started for Chavis.

I hate being mentioned in the bottom tier of programs like Ole Miss or Kentucky. But give this guy a chance to 1) fill out a full 85 man roster and 2) coach these players under the same system for more than 1-2 years.

This roster and talent situation is the #1 reason we could not attract a top-shelf coach in the first place. Anyone expecting a a New Year's Bowl bid in this situation is hitting the crack with Charlie Sheen.

I cannot stand these cocky fans of other schools kicking sand in our face. And I can't believe that S Carolina and Arkansas have far surpassed us. But our program needs time to build something. We hired Kiffin and that got us nothing except a first name basis with the NCAA. If Dooley doesn't get it done after the roster is made up entirely of his recruits, replace him. By then, our program will be more attractive to all those genius coaches the knee-jerk types want running the program.

Nice post, but its a lost cause.

Too many negative nancy's on this board

Everyone should be able to instantly win the NC like Alabama, Auburn, and Florida after changing coaches

I agree brother. Too many people on here believe we didn't play football at UT before Peyton Manning arrived.

100% agree, with all the resources UT has at its disposal, they still couldn't find a "name" coach that would touch this rebuilding job with a 10ft.pole....give Dooley time to get the program back on its feet

It's understandable that the fanbase is restless, afterall it has been forever. Fulmer ran it into the dirt, Kiffin set it back another two years and Mike Hamilton was a miserable AD. Hard to do too much with all that going on at basically the same time.

Just as everything fell in place for us to win it all in 1998, it has all aligned to bring it down

It is what it is. At least all those people responsible are gone except a few stubborn boosters, who's opinion we should have disregarded.

One more point -

We as fans have never endured a rebuilding project. Consider these 2 statistics.

1. UT and Ohio St are the only 2 programs never to lose more than 7 games in a season.

2. 1910-11 was the last time UT endured back-to-back losing seasons.

assuming we end up 6 and 6, which we would have to beat vandy, we might have our first back to back losing seasons in 100 years. sad

Watch in 6-8 yrs time when Dooley decides to leave for wherever....the cast of candidates will be top shelf guys, looking to back into a sweet program.

Even CPF when axed by Hammy, suggested he would passionagely love to coach again...IF the right situation was made availalble.

So....rebuilding is not something for the weak at heart or for coaches who have been through that process once already.
