Both look like they were pressing. Trying real hard instead of just playing ball.

Tennessee needs to invest in some back up quarterbacks.

Sry Maurer fans........but I speak the truth.

Shrout can wing it. He needs some seasoning. Maurer can run, we know that, needs some seasoning in throwing it.

We need to invest in some QB's...period. You can say all you want about the backups, but the truth of the matter is that our starter has shown no progression from what got him half killed last season. He holds the ball in the pocket too long. He doesn't come off his first receiver. He throws too late. This is his 4th year in the program.

My 13 year old son might have said it best. The receivers aren't ready for the ball because they're not used to it being delivered on time.

90 some percent wanted to bench JG

I stuck with him

I agree didn't see enough from Maurer to get a hard decision.

But I think too many people overreacted like they always do.

Shrout needs better touch on his passes. Maurer may be the better all-around talent, but he needs a lot more seasoning. He looked like a true freshman in a lot of ways, which is of course what he is.

Shocker.

People always think the next Peyton Manning is sitting on the bench. He's not.

I hate to say it, but Shrout looked very bad. The criticism for him is that while he has a strong arm, he was not very accurate in high school, and was very turnover prone. He showed that this game. Got bailed out of a bad INT by a roughing the passer call. Lots of poor throws. Felt like he got better as he found a groove, though.

Maurer didn't really show much of anything. He scrambled a lot, but didn't complete a pass. Still reminds me of Josh Dobbs as a Freshman a bit. People forget that Dobbs was very bad as a Freshman; he could scramble, but he threw 6 INTs vs 2 TDs, and an INT for every ~ 20 passes. It wasn't till Dobbs was a Sophomore that the game slowed down for him a bit and he felt more like an SEC caliber QB. Maurer has a bright future IMO, but he's just not ready yet.

JG found a groove here and wasn't over-analyzing things. Let's hope he continues with that against Florida.

Lets not church this up..it was against a glorified high school team. JG will be eaten alive until UAB.

I disagree. He has athleticism and you cannot tell what he may do with the limited playing time today with 2nd and 3rd team players. His upside is unknown at this time.

JG is currently watching the QB who gets him benched later this year.
Vols QBs today...

JG- 7/8, 142 yards, 3 tds, 0 ints
Shrout- 3-9, 23 yards, 0 tds 1 int (negated due to roughing the passer penalty)
Maurer- 0-3, 0 yards, 0 tds, 0 ints

Say what you will, but now we see why Chaney abd Pruitt are playing JG. Is JG great, no. Has he played like ish this year, yes. Is he our best qb, you damn straight.

Both Maurer and Shrout need to significantly up their play.

Not disagreeing, but Shrout and Maurer also played against the same "glorified high school team".

Yet, somehow, many of you manage to believe that the QBs that played poorly against a "glorified high school team" are going to magically play great against an SEC team. At least JG played well against the "glorified high school team." Whether he plays well against Florida is another story, but I'm not from this weird school of thought where QBs that play poorly in practice, the spring game, and an FCS team will magically play better against Florida, Georgia, and Bama.
