Maurer (Freshman 2019) vs JG (Senior 2020)

If I am to believe the 2020 Vols are improved from the 2019 team then how do I explain these stat lines?

Its unbelievably easy actually...

Maurer"s mobility minimized the pass rush impact as he could scramble out and force to UGA defenders to defend more space. He averaged more yards per attempt and kept the secondary somewhat more honest.

This opened up holes for our running game. Not saying 70 yards of total rushing is good but its way better than the -1 gained in 2020.

Ball security advantage Maurer? Who would have thought it right? But JG won the turnover battle and did it while we were leading not trying to make plays when we were trailing. Hopefully no further explanation is needed.

It cannot be any clearer that JG is NOT the QB this team needs to continue to elevate their performance. Im not saying Maurer is either but its harder to sack strip fumble a moving target than one that stays basically still in the pocket.

We just witnessed another JG mental breakdown and while its easy to blame the coaches or the O line the only consistency in JG'S performance over the last 4 years is himself. He cannot handle adversity well in big situations and this characteristic limits his ability and that of the team.

Maurer had Jennings and Calloway, was playing at home, and Georgia is much more salty on defense this year than last.

Instead of using one game against a common opponent, why don’t you compare their stats from last year for all games played. After that, then you’ll see why Maurer probably won’t play again for Tennessee

It was just an ugly game all around. A penalty-ridden 1st half followed by a turnover-ridden 2nd half. Throw in the inability to run in both halves and you have the recipe for disaster that was yesterday.

UGA had the number one defense last year too. They actually are not as good. But pretty close...

I'm not saying Mayer isn't good or that JG is. My guess is that neither would start for any SEC team.

People that talk about Maurer forget he's fragile, he completed 47% of his passes and threw 5 picks against 2 TD

Again, I don't see practice and maybe he's great but I didn't see what many others saw last year.

I just wonder if Shrout shouldn't be the bridge from now to Bailey. He's been given such a short leash it's hard to tell but he seems to have a big arm.

Or, maybe all 3 are just awful

They have been compared and those who don’t WANT to see the difference deny it. Maurer was better in games he was prepared to play in and better vs top teams. Those who want to deny it INSIST that you include his garbage time for the season. What makes that argument stupid is the fact that IF JP went with Maurer he’s already proven he can do it effectively AND he would be prepared every week unlike now.

Maurer had Jennings and Calloway ? Who do you think JG was throwing up 50-50 balls to ? Jennings and Calloway saved JG butt so many times pulling wounded ducks out of the air.

JG is not the guy this team needs as he can neither make quick decisions/release the ball to beat the blitz nor can he recognize the pressure and escape it using his legs. You must be able to do 1 of those 2 and if you can do both you will play on Sundays in your future.

Unfortunately not only can JG not do either of those things he stays focused on the bad play and cannot mentally move forward which causes there to be even more bad plays to occur.

Its not JG'S fault the blitzer got to him but it is his fault he doesn't evade pressure, he doesn't release the ball on time and he doesn't secure the ball when under pressure.

Not a single one of those fumbles was from a hard hit they were all strips that could have been prevented. We see QB's avoid these plays every single week but when our guy does the exact opposite of what we see other QB's do way too many blame the blocking or play calling instead of the guy who failed in the execution on his end.

We need a QB that can overcome a missed block and force defenses to be balanced and honest, not a QB that brings no threat that he can create on his own.

What do opposing defenses fear that JG brings to the game?
