Maurer doubtful for Saturday

Seriously?? Where is this info coming from. Not good at all if it’s true.
They were saying that on THE ZONE here in Nashville that Maurer was at Vanderbilt for evaluating/treatment/tests. They didn’t say for what but they did say he was there yesterday.

I’ll see if I can find it again and post it but just in case I’ll explain what I read and interpreted

-Vandy and UT are partners in concussion procedure

- evidently Vanderbilts specializes in head injuries where UT does not (every hospital has what they are best known for)

- Brian went to see a Neurologist for tests that are not available at UT. * side note- going to Vanderbilt is one of the last steps before being cleared after a confirmed concussion but don’t read too deep into that. He won’t be cleared for SC maybe even UAB imo.

That’s the synopsis of it.

Personally answering your question a concussion was never confirmed at any point until POSSIBLY after the Alabama game. To my knowledge it still has yet to be determined at any point which I’m sure prompted the Vandy visit today. This is a “better safe than sorry” visit but the doc may hold him out for a week or 2.
Any insider news from the family or close friends?

As much as I would love to have him back out there and as much as his being out there increases UT's chances of making a bowl... I hope they're careful and take great care of him.

I wish this site had DM because there are only a couple on this board I wouldn’t mind sharing more with, you included.
The visit to Vandy was strictly precautionary. No unforeseen or “worse” than thought. Just going above and beyond for safety reasons.

That's what every person on this board wants to hear. And all they really need to know.

I understand. But there are several that have “made a name for themselves” in my mind. Also I don’t like putting info out there before it’s released so there are only a few I would trust to keep it quiet until it became public.

I'd typically say that in spite of JG's flaws, he probably gives us a better shot, but at this point, it feels like he's lost his confidence entirely.

Hate to say it, but it's going to be very difficult to pull out a "W" without Maurer. That said, the way our O-line handled their business the past few weeks, we might be able to get away with a run-heavy gameplan and keep things simple for Shrout.

Well, we are 1-1 with Maurer starting and playing less than 1/2 a game each time.

I would have thought Knox Baptist would have been plenty good enough. But, if your getting free treatment at VUMC, then by all means road trip.

Good protocol on the concussion issue. Can't take lightly and winning a game not worth losing the player. We lost a HS Junior 2 years ago because of the Tennessee HS rules limiting the number of concussions a player can have before he is disqualified. It is currently 4, but probably too high IMO.

They're getting a second well respected opinion. After getting knocked out of two games in a row, bringing him back next weekend...let alone this weekend...even if he clears protocol by team doctors will bring some scrutiny. Let's say they pulled him against Alabama out of an abundance of caution and he has actually cleared protocol for this weekend. You'd still get killed in the media. But if you can say you went above and beyond to get a second opinion and they also cleared him...that kills the potential negative press. The other thing that could be going on is that they want him to see a specialist to figure out why he has gotten concussions from relatively minor hits to the head. The one against MSU should've been more of a neck issue and the last one he got his head snapped forward more so than taking a knee to the back of the head.

Just my thoughts.

For each concussion you get, the next one comes easier. This will be a part of the rest of his career at UT, and it won't be his last zinger. So, better try to get him darn right before sending him back out.

Probably doubtful means it's slightly above 50% chance that hes doubtful.

In reality we can probably assume that Maurer is more like...possibly questionable to play as opposed to probably doubtful but I guess it all depends on how you interpret it .

My opinion is....hes playing on Saturday...unless he doesnt.

Depending on the head injury to Maurer, I would keep him out for a few weeks and let Shrout gain some experience with Guarantano as the backup option and Jennings as an emergency option.
