Matt was on the SportsAnimal radio earlier today. He was heading to take his last final exam before signing with Tennessee.
Why Tennessee?
Simms: When you go on a visit to Tennessee it's hard to turn it down, just for the tradition and the academics. Who doesn't want to be a Volunteer? You gotta be crazy not to be a Volunteer.
Does that mean your brother is crazy?
Simms: I just remember on day hearing he was going to Tennessee and the next day hearing he was going to some school in Texas. It happened really fast. I was actually talking to him the other night saying that he needs me to salvage his rep down there in Tennessee. He's real happy for me and so is my family. We are all excited about it.
Is your father fond of Tennessee?
Simms: My father is very fond of Coach Kiffin and Monte, his father. He respects them very much. I think the program is doing well, so that's probably what he's most fond of.
Regarding the depth chart and competing for a position.
Simms: My goal coming out of junior college was to transfer during mid-year and to be able to go somewhere and compete right away. Coach Kiffin and the coaching staff told me that I will have an opportunity, just like everyone else, to compete and get a chance on the field. You couldn't ask for anything more.
Regarding his game at how it's changed during junior college.
Simms: My game has changed a lot. The confidence, for one, competing against a lot of great players -- Bruce Irvin for one, another guy who is coming to Tennessee. I've played against him. It's the little things: your footwork, your mechanics, just constantly getting better every day.
Thoughts on Bruce Irvin and Kenbrell Thompkins?
Simms: Bruce is really really fast. I had to run for my life like two times in that game. Kenbrell is a great player with great hands. He's going to be a down-field threat for sure. I look forward to hooking up with him a few times in practice.
