Matt Campbell era (2016–present)[edit]

Head coach Matt Campbell
Matt Campbell, who had been the head coach at the University of Toledo, was named head coach at Iowa State on November 29, 2015. Campbell signed a six-year contract worth $2 million his first year.[74] Campbell finished his first season as a Cyclone with a record of 3–9. Despite the disappointing record there were several high points during the season that showed progress including several near upsets and a blowout win over Texas Tech. The 66–10 rout of the Red Raiders included breaking several school records including points scored in a conference game.[75]

So far, the 2017 season has gone a lot better for Matt Campbell and the Cyclones. The Cyclones are currently 7-4, two of their wins being over #3 Oklahoma and #4 TCU.

Campbell isn’t going to Tennessee, or any other program. You don’t sign that contract unless you’re planning on staying for awhile.

This is sounding more and more like we end up with Schiano which to me is absolutely awful. Throw big money around and land that guy??? Ridiculous

You do if it's your shot to get into the big leagues.

Let's face it. The buyout isn't that high compared to the money people have.

FFS we're doing a 300mil reno on Neyland.

Only coach he talked about being in play was Mullen. If only UF and Neb didn't have openings, Frost would be a lock to us. I think he's the next big thing

If frost had success here he would go to Nebraska. Blessing in disguise.

I keeping seeing people say that, but don't you think they would set his contract up in a way that makes it hard for Nebraska to hire him? Other schools have put a special provision in a coach's contract to make it really hard for them to leave for a specific school. If he became the next coach at UT, then you can bet his contract would be set-up to keep him from jumping to Nebraska.

I'll be upset if that's the result of this search. Butch 2.0 IMO.

I'd almost rather have the North Dakota St coach than Schiano

Why does everyone think just throwing money will make anyone come?

Some of these guys are already making 4+ million and they may like where they live and have job stability. Or more importantly their wives and family may like where they live and like that chances of having to move in 3-5 years is slim.

Come to TN for a lot of money? Great!
Fail to win the SEC East by year 3 and you lose the fan base. Slide back any in year 4 and you are looking for a new job soon.

Expect an up and comer and hope for the best.

I have no idea who we end up with. Currie has been really good at keeping everything quiet. I just can't see Schiano, but that isn't based on any knowledge. It would just be all time stupid.

Not saying he's wrong- but I'm willing to bet he doesn't know.

If he knew, a story would break about it.

Yep. If Currie is to be believed, no one in the media knows what's going with the UT search. Until we announce the guy, all the pundits are speculating.

No one is going to pay that buyout. 9 mil in 45 days that cannot be spread out. That's insanity before you even pay him an annual salary. Petersen's buyout is 1.5 million, Jimbo Fisher is around 6 million and those have negotiable timetables for payoff. Campbell has one helluva poison pill to get him out of ISU.

Why? What's so bad about Schiano? Serious question--I don't know too much about him, except he did great at Rutgers, has been considered for several big time jobs, he's turned several opportunities down, and Urban Meyer loves him.

Is it because he failed in the NFL (hello a lot of other successful HC's)?

It’s likely Campbell knows it’s not his only shot, besides he’s already at a P5.

Lol, I bet you’re anticipating UT spending 300 million on a coach
