Mathews: Expect Fulmer to hire a defense guy as head coach

Narduzzi is an interesting name and I like anyone who is associated with Dantonio. The guy has been a consistently solid coach in a tough environment.

Far better to discuss someone like him than to keep rehashing the high school crushes of some of these posters on here like Kiffin.

To each is own I guess...if Narduzzi was announced tomorrow I think you'd be in the minority of satisfied fans jmo

Not even close.

Thought Petersen, Patterson, Gundy, and Shaw should have been the first tier. Didn't expect any to come but should make them say no.

Then work down from there to the Norvells and Morris level as 3rd or 4th tier.

Think Leach would have been highly intriguing.

The game has changed and, given UT isn't going to out talent teams like Alabama or Georgia anymore as they did when Fulmer was coaching, I don't think this old school approach is going to work. Guys like Doeren, Schiano, or Narduzzi going defense and ball control first will win some games but I doubt they get them back to a championship level.

All that being said, I'm not going to wear blinders to what Kiffin did to the Vols just because he throws out cute tweets and is winning games at FAU. The guy is a walking train wreck off the field and it's one of the very few things I can agree with Fulmer on.

Keep pounding on that one point because you can't dispute anything else.

Here was your vaunted press conference.

He didn't answer a SINGLE question. Not ONE. Spouted some platitudes and walked out the door. Some press conference. Literally slunk his way out the door ignoring questions.

I am convinced Kiffin is trying to get an offer to turndown. That would eliminate the "blemish" from his record.... "They wanted me back, but I felt It just wasn't a fit anymore"

Why not get a great offensive coach and get him a great D-coordinator? We could have both...Just saying.

Witch Doctor pulled/lobbied for Kiffin, but the second Fulmer took over that was dead. But saying that, glad Fulmer has taken over. Witch Doctor knows Fulmer will do what he believes is best of Tennessee. We may not all agree, but Fulmer will do what he believes is best for Tennessee.

Are you including his abysmal record at Oakland dummy? It's part of his coaching win/loss record.

Don't have a dog in the hunt -- but you can't blend in anyone's pro record ... apples and oranges. Just ask Steve Spurrier and the little guy at Alabama.

Doug Matthews said this morning on his radio show that in a conversation last week with Phillip Fulmer (obviously prior to be named AD), Fulmer pointed out that six (maybe seven) of Tennessee's eight SEC losses came at the hands of defensive head coaches (physically aggressive). He expects Fulmer will take a hard look at coaches who have experience on that side of the ball.

He expects that any coach who will be considered will:

1. Be willing to line up under center
2. Have a lead blocking fullback package
3. The ability to run the football with two tight ends.

According to Matthews Fulmer also knows that at Tennessee, a recruiting head coach is a must.

Matthews also says that Fulmer understands the importance of strength and conditioning. John Stuckey was his first hire as football coach and the one who built the foundation of those championship teams. Fulmer talks about him more than any other staff member.

So you say we are going boring offense again?...Fulmer wants HIS style of play out of a head coach...Dear god please make this nightmare go away.

Fulmer is still living in the past and wants the new coach to play on the field with the same old stuff he used. Go ahead and see how that works out for you. I really don't see TN winning any more than 4 or 5 games next year. Fulmer WAKE UP. This is not fairyland, but the land of legends. You will be facing Saban, Smart, Jimbo Fisher, and Mullen. Don't forget Kiffin. You will have no chance in hell to win a championship with that sort of ideology. If anyone, I mean anyone thinks so they will have a rude awakening.

Kiffin is a twitter idiot. But that doesnt mean he cannot coach. Kiffin should at the very least get an interview. He may very well be a great coach here. I wouldnt have a problem with him coming back.

but i do understand why many dont want him.

Agreed. What is the harm in interviewing him?

I was thinking about Sumlin and how Central Florida is looking to hire him. If you're Sumlin, do u want a job where is literally ZERO chance...EVER you can make it to the final 4 BCS games? They were undefeated this year and the best they can do is 10th. That is totally maxed out and as far as they can ever go. If he takes that job he's giving up ANY CHANCE EVER of winning a national championship.

At least at UT IF you win you CAN get there. Literally NO CHANCE at UCF.

I think he wants a lower level job where he can recharge. Having the weight of Aggie Nation on your shoulders can wear a brutha out!

What does Fulmer really NEED and NOT need to do?

1...If we're really willing to spend $6 Million to $8 Million per year for our next HC then we do NOT need a stopgap coach like Miles, ect that WILL put us back in the coaching hire again in 3 to 5 years.

2...Since everyone knows that a stout D is what WINS lots of games and Championships
then we need to focus on a current HC that's solid D minded or a good DC.

3...We need a HC that loves footVol and is VERY passionate and will instantly bring back excitement to both us fans and to our players.

4...We need a HC that has recently WON either a conference or a National Championship
that can identify with the young high school kids that we will be going after in the recruiting wars.

5...We need to give our new HC all the $$$ he needs to hire great Coordinators and position coaches.

6...We need to make certain that all our coaches ARE really good or great recruiters as well as great coaches.

7...It would be a BIG plus if some of our next coaches/recruiters are already recruiting in the same areas and for the same top prospects that we're going after, then the recruits already know something about our new coaching staff.

In my opinion if all Fulmer does now is hire a Miles type coach as a stopgap then we're just setting our beloved footVol program back another decade and that's NOT acceptable.

aTm just made a huge statement by signing Jimbo Fisher to a crazy 10 year contract for $75 Million and THAT is telling everyone that they're seriously dedicated to lots of WINS and going after Championships.

Tennessee needs to make a serious statement too that we ARE coming after Fisher, Smart, Mullen, nick saTan and everyone else in the country with this hire right now.

Tell the world that Tennessee is NOT playing around and that we're also willing to spend the BIG $$$$ to get lots of WINS and Championships like our history and Traditions dictate us to do.

I would go steal Venables away from Clemson and that would send a huge message to everyone.

You can bet that every top D high school recruit already knows who Coach Venables is and he'll add instant credibility to our footVol Team.

The rock needs to get painted to hire Venables now.

Just my opinions but I think Fulmer should talk seriously with Coach Venables.

VFL...GBO!!!
