Mathews: Expect Fulmer to hire a defense guy as head coach

Just to be clear, Matthews is the one who referred to Kiffin as 'the punk.'

Thats because he is a punk

I stood in line to get a signature from him during the Spring Game in 2009

He didn't say 2 words to any of the fans waiting in his line. He acted like he was above all of us. No smile, nod of the head, or thanks for your support...nothing

Pellini might be in the discussion. Good recruiter, familiar with the region, decent record at Nebraska which honestly I don't see anyone doing better there.

I bet if you called him up and asked, he’d send you a signed FAU t-shirt.

Doug Matthews said this morning on his radio show that in a conversation last week with Phillip Fulmer (obviously prior to be named AD), Fulmer pointed out that six (maybe seven) of Tennessee's eight SEC losses came at the hands of defensive head coaches (physically aggressive). He expects Fulmer will take a hard look at coaches who have experience on that side of the ball.

He expects that any coach who will be considered will:

1. Be willing to line up under center
2. Have a lead blocking fullback package
3. The ability to run the football with two tight ends.

According to Matthews Fulmer also knows that at Tennessee, a recruiting head coach is a must.

Matthews also says that Fulmer understands the importance of strength and conditioning. John Stuckey was his first hire as football coach and the one who built the foundation of those championship teams. Fulmer talks about him more than any other staff member.
Sounds like someone who knows what it takes to win in the SEC..

Then Fulmer should recuse himself if he’s not willing to interview every candidate.

Not if he doesnt believe him to be a candidate. Based on his actions alone, ignore his average HC record, programs are staying away from him. Not everyone wants the face of their University, and state, to be a immature overgrown child. And I am not even talking about him leaving us. That's a whole seperate issue. Want to guess why no program has interviewed for a spot yet?

Ironically CPF had the number one ranked total defense in the conference the year he got fired. It was ranked #3 nationally. His offense was next to last in the conference that year and 5th from last nationally. Our offense was ranked 6th from last this year nationally and last in the conference. Defense wasn't much better at 10th in the conference and 82nd nationally.

Gary Patterson is a good defensive coach AND a good offensive coach. The year CPF was fired CGP had the #1 Defense in the Nation and #24 offense in the nation. This year he had the #19 defense and #52 offense.

Gary Patterson looks like a pretty good candidate to me. jmo.
