A bit off topic, here along the same vein...

In Cookeville last weekend, we had these matchups among the big schools (no slight intended to the little schools...I just didn't see their games)

Henry Co & Powell
Whitehaven & Maryville
Ensworth & Baylor
Greenesville & Nashville something (East maybe?)
CAK & ?

All those good teams...and I don't think the Vols were recruiting any kids off any of those teams....(besides the one lineman from Henry County). Seems like we have lost our way or something

There just aren't that many SEC caliber players playing in those games. A few underclassmen that will get looks.

I guess that is true. I was searching but must admit...I didn't see it. There were a couple of big, fast kids from Whitehaven that had the look. Someone said they were both juniors. Corn from Ensworth got hurt early in that game. But I've seen him before. Again he is a junior. If he grows a little more, I think he might can help us.

Why were you in cookeville? I went to college there for four years. Live close?

No, I didn't mean that I was in Cookeville. I meant that all the state championship games were played there last weekend. I watched a little of the action on PBS.

I also spent four years in good ole CookVegas! Browning dorm! Cock-roaches the size of mini-vans

Jackson

You have mentioned Columbia a time or 2 on here. Do you know if Mathers and Ronnie Pillow are connected?

Good morning Bruin!

I do not know. I'm just trying to read thru all that news from last night. You have a great post in there BTW. I have an old high school friend who settled in Columbia and has raised a family there. So if no one else comes along who can answer that question, I can see if that guy can find out.

I am asking around today. If RP is in his ear that's why we are all of sudden in this thing.

Bruin, what's Ronnie Pillow up to these days?

I have no idea. Hearing his name yesterday brought back some memories.

I haven't been able to find anybody that can substantiate what I heard about his friendship with JayG and Mathers getting our foot in the door.

I watched Ronnie play basketball several times in high school (Columbia Central). He was incredible.

I played football at Hickman County. We played CC twice and got killed both times. Anybody remember a guy named Fred Sparkman?

Columbia Central had some solid basketball teams back in the 80's and '90s. Are you old enough to remember Fred Jenkins. Ugly free throw shooter. Magic at point guard for Columbia

Yes. He was a beast. Went to UNC, got in some trouble, and transferred to a small school. I think he either graduated last year or is graduating this year.

Columbia has an unbelievable amount of basketball and football talent. The kids there get no exposure from the Nashville media and the best talent has historically struggled with grades.

That is interesting. Hadn't heard that about the grades.

Yea he was. I shoe string tackled once him once and he got pissed, got up and called me a "B", and on the next play they ran a off tackle play to the right. He ran away from the blocking on purpose, came back to the left where I was playing corner, ran me over and then trotted 40 yards for the TD. Lol

Columbia has had some remarkable talent as well as the town over.. Lewisburg. (Dont'a Hightower) and basketball Marcus Haislip and Kedron Johnson. But like Columbia some of the best talent could not come close to any sort of qualifying grades.
