Massacre at Virginia Tech

They are online. Go to Ancestry.com. They have all of them available to view. Spend some time browsing and doing research. Go to your library. Most have census documents on microfilm. Or go to your closest National Archives. See for yourself and even speak with the specialists there. They will be happy to confirm what I've said.
I am not going to peer over 50,000,000 records, much less 92,000,000. If this proof abounds everywhere and you are such an expert in the field, simply send me a link to a scholarly article or journal that debunks my position that between 1900 and 1910, more Americans lived in rural areas than in urban centers.

And kiddiedoc I agree completely about the whole politicizing issue. Every blog and board out there seems to be arguing this. Let's just pray for those families and reflect on that.

I am not going to peer over 50,000,000 records, much less 92,000,000. If this proof abounds everywhere and you are such an expert in the field, simply send me a link to a scholarly article or journal that debunks my position that between 1900 and 1910, more Americans lived in rural areas than in urban centers.

Again, go ask. Talk to the experts. I didn't pour over that many records to see the obvious. Just spend some time getting the full story before making a claim. You can get the primary source to confirm this.

Do some Google queries to see that urban-rural definitions also changed throughout census periods.

You are always commenting on deviation and poll accuracy. You do know that the Census has a margin of error don't you? In 1900, an enumerator would go door to door. If someone was home, they recorded what that person told them. If no one was home, that was it. So if people were at work, they were not counted.

The definition posted by the Census Bureau of urban, for 2000, is as follows:
For Census 2000, the Census Bureau classifies as "urban" all territory, population, and housing units located within an urbanized area (UA) or an urban cluster (UC). It delineates UA and UC boundaries to encompass densely settled territory, which consists of:
  • core census block groups or blocks that have a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile and
  • surrounding census blocks that have an overall density of at least 500 people per square mile
In addition, under certain conditions, less densely settled territory may be part of each UA or UC.
The Census Bureau's classification of "rural" consists of all territory, population, and housing units located outside of UAs and UCs. The rural component contains both place and nonplace territory. Geographic entities, such as census tracts, counties, metropolitan areas, and the territory outside metropolitan areas, often are "split" between urban and rural territory, and the population and housing units they contain often are partly classified as urban and partly classified as rural.

I would imagine that the "urban definition" in 1900 consisted of even less residents per 640 acres. So, I would imagine that more people who lived in a rural setting were classified as urban, than urbanites who were classed as living in a rural setting.

I'm wondering if we could just start a thread for everyone to argue with RealUT about random topics?

I just watched the entire Hokie gymnasium rise and chant "Let's Go Hokies" loudly and proudly...

I'm Volunteeer through and through, but seeing that emotional release from them put a tear in my eye.

Touching.

i don't remember where i read it, but someone was quoted as saying "today we are all hokies". I have never in my life pulled for the hokies in anything, but today i am absolutely a Hokie. my thoughts and prayers are with each and everyone involved in this tragic event.

:peace:

Yes, just like they made drugs illegal. Everyone knows ammunition won't be brought into the country then, because it is illegal.

and if someone wants to buy ammunition illegally, it will cost them. If bullets cost more, it will deter people from using them. I seem to remember Chris Rock saying something about this.

Do you really think people would do less drugs if they were legal and more affordable?

I will save the rest of the gun debate for another time and place.

I'd imagine Stephen King had some "creative writing" during his younger days as well.

Yeah the writers of a few of these movies out now would fall into that category as well. But no one questions their sanity. Just shut up and pay for your ticket, coke, and popcorn.
