The problem is when "deranged/troubled) people can be brought into groups and weaponized. Be it theological (militant Islamists, etc) or political (Weather Underground, etc) it can get hairy pretty quickly. A crazy with a cause is bad. Crazies with a cause have the potential to be much, much worse.

It can happen. It has happened. It just doesn't happen enough or with consequential events to make it a legitimate concern to me.

The Oklahoma City bomber did more damage as a single person than a group like the Weather Underground. I look at the 911 attack as the exception and not the rule.

And you would be right to do so...at this point anyway. The sketchy part is every "big" thing of that nature started from a much smaller group. Running around in screaming paranoia is silly but being unwilling to say "maybe we should keep an eye on X" isn't prudent either.

I hope so. Depending on what X is some would consider "keeping an eye on" anywhere from paranoid to phobic. The real brass tacks point is somewhere between extreme team A and team B is the rational POV and we don't need either side pulling the middle too far in either direction.
