Marvin West column on Tennessee football

That's a nice little read and I certainly promote an appreciation for the rich history of UT and the football program. Hard to imagine kids being recruited now wren't even alive when UT last won a national championship. Time for this generation to add to the program's wonderful history.

This needs to be reposted or stickied come the first of the new season. The hype videos give me chills, but visualizing the words of a finely written piece about our Vols, it's history, and it's meaning, makes me want to don the pads and go running through the T. Go Vols!

Great, great story. If only walls could talk. Marvin West can surely tell a story, and being 72 myself, I have been within those walls and have seen many of those players and coaches perform. The tradition at UT is special and needs to be told more often to those that weren't around to see all those great people.

This should be required reading for every recruit and player.

There's not nearly enough great writing like this about our history and Traditions.

I bleed Tennessee Orange with every cut and scratch and I'm damned proud I do!

VFL...GBO!!!

So sad that this type of journalism has been replaced by the negativism that pervades almost every article in today's sporting press. Marvin West was the headlining writer when I was at UT. He could criticize the team, coaches, and players but he always did so with the respect for the program so evident in this article.

Marvin West

I saw his name and Tennessee Football Saturday & Sunday morning newspaper sports pages leapt to memory.

Thanks Marvin. You know how it's done.

Great article. Outside of my family, what I miss most by living so far away is going to the hallowed grounds of Neyland Stadium.

I'm showing my age. I used to subscribe to both the Sentinel and Journal. The journal mainly for Mr. Wests columns If I remember right I got one in the morning and the other in late afternoon.

Yep...the Sentinel in the morning and the Journal in the afternoon. Ben Byrd and Marvin West were as good as it gets.

I have always enjoyed reading the articles Mr. West has written about the Vols. Very well spoken (written).

Dyergrams.. What a concept. You could actually replay the game in your head by just reading those. Forgot all about them.. THANKS! Great memory.

Edit.. Went out and tried to find one of these. Google returned one, and it was small. Here it is. If anybody has a larger version, please share!

That's the Dyergram of the 1959 Vols vs No. 1-ranked LSU Bengal Tigers which the Vols won, 14-13. I was one of several Vol fans down on the goalline when we stopped the legendary Billy Cannon's two-point attempt to win the game. You can Youtube the game and see yours truly, Jr. high letter-jacket, white socks and rolled-up cuff blue jeans and all, leaping and going crazy when Charlie Severance, Wayne Grubb, and Bill Majors stuffed Cannon at the one yd line. I was 14 and the battle cry all that beautiful November afternoon was "LSU, who are you? You won't be first when the Vols get through?" Damn, I'm getting chill bumps just typing this...

Wow, Great story. John Ward has a good story about play. Apparently he was the PA guy and yelled "He didn't make it" or something like that, before the ref signaled. He speculated that he influenced the call.

Wonderful story!! THANKS
