Martin staying, officially. Statements from Hart and Martin.

I found this to be thread worthy and wanted to post it for those who may not see it in the other thread.

HART

“... operating within the parameters dictated by the University of Tennessee and the NCAA matters greatly. Additionally, the social culture of the men’s basketball program has vastly improved under Cuonzo’s leadership.

Not so subtle references to Pearl.

"Be the last team standing". WOW!!! I like the sound of that! You know I hit the like button!

I'm glad Coach Martin is staying because we would have really taken a big step backwards if he had left. It has been said Coach Martin is a players coach, well if he really wants to be successful at UT he needs to work on being a fans coach as well. At this level of college sports there is more to it than just you, your team and your staff. If Coach Martin had any kind of connection with the fans he could make it through the tuff times a little better.

If he wins, maybe?

Now that both parties (the school and the coach) seem to be committed to each other, I would like to see CCM improve his external communication skills and engage more with the fans, alumni, big boosters and especially the students. I know he does not have an outgoing personality, but he never gave me (as an alumnus) the feeling that he really wanted to be here. Just as he made a connection with his players as their mentor and coach, he needs to figure out how to make a connection with the rest of us. The students have the ability to really impact the in-game atmosphere and have his back when things get bumpy.

The only thing he owes the students is success on the court. I see no reason why he has to use his time figuring out a way to "connect" with the students. I'd rather he spend that time, game planning, developing the team, and recruiting. If he wins the "connection" will follow.

You are exactly right but in my opinion if he wants to be successful here he needs to make more of an effort to be liked by the fans. He won 24 games and made it to the sweet 16 this year and almost had to leave. The ride would be much smoother for everyone if he would connect with the fans. Like it or not when you are a coach at this level you almost have to be a promoter.
Maybe his personality will not allow him to do this and if so his time here is going to be rocky at best.

Completely disagree. We are not Kentucky. We can be Tier One in y-chromosome basketball too. We need an AD who can get off his hands and make it happen.

I think it possible Cuonzo turned a corner in his coaching trajectory last three weeks and I'm keen to see what he does with 'his' team now. I was BBB but I'm ready for the Cuonzo era. Long may it reign.
Your "get off his hands" schtick has gotten old. Not clever, funny, or accurate.

Yeah I can see that point for sure. It just makes me think of the Bill Selfs, Coach K's, Roy Williams' of the world and what they do to interact with their students. Roy may have a little more personality but Coach K and Bill Self seem mundane at best, but they win.

I have been critical of CCM, but He did make adjustments after the second TX A&M loss. I give him credit for the changes. Even though he has said he never changed and they stuck with their system, the last three weeks of the season included more AM and more passion from CCM. I believe the players responded to his passion and that produced the run.

“The past three seasons here at the University of Tennessee have been extremely rewarding for me, my family and my staff. We accepted some unique challenges when we took over this program in 2011, but our recent run to the Sweet Sixteen proves that our blueprint for achieving excellence both on and off the court can generate tremendous results

This right here. The last dozen or so games were absolutely beautiful: shut down defense, dominate the boards, great shot selection, great decision making on when to push and when to pull up, etc. That's the on-court blueprint they were finally playing to.

If that blueprint can start being drawn up at the start of the season, we'll be talking turkey!!!
