It sounds like Cal called him and offered him the job:

"To that, Martin said, "It's a tremendous opportunity. They chose me. I don't take that lightly." "

Can someone quickly get a petition going for Auburn to fire Bruce Pearl?
They'll have no trouble getting at least 36,000 signatures.

Now that sounds like a message @ the UT situation. CCM probably felt the lack of support from fans as well as admins. Smart move to take a lateral with a pay raise and another 3-4 year lease w new buyout. I don't blame him at all. Its just business, and if it were me, I would take it too.

UT needs to make the most of this opportunity and upgrade. Roster should be decent in year 2,for new coach. How they can get it done. In ready to see all the work pay off with at least a 2nd level program with a shot at a championship in a good roster scenario year.

Some guy cused me out for signing the BBB petition. He said it was fing fault we let a great coach go.... same guy said zo had a better record then BP tho

A lot of revisionist history around here. I don't recall many people saying it was a bad idea, at the time. Where were all these people when the season looked like it was over (as far as making the tourney)? Vewy vewy quiet.

According to a quote from Cuonzo, it (the petition) was a very good teaching point for his players, and it obviously worked. I think what some of the boosters did with the planes, and what Hart did by not making his new contract the way he wanted it, was a much bigger factor than the petition, when it came to him making the jump to Cal.

Of course the national media is giving us a black eye now, and we know they are always right.

All these people calling pearl a liar, yet in most circles (outside of the BS that is the NCAA), what he did is less slimey than leaving his team without even saying a word to them or giving his AD more than an hours warning. Especially when you factor in Pearl never claimed to be about integrity or anything in that level of self righteous crap. A hypocrite is no different than a liar, their lies are just much longer and harder to keep up.

The thing is, the bolded hurts our brand more than many people seem to believe. You don't eat at the restaurant with a rep for spitting in the food. I worry that the 'black eye' will be a significant obstacle in the coaching search and subsequent recruiting.

For the record, frankly I don't care that Martin left. I didn't dislike him enough to actively call for his head, but I also think he's very replaceable as a coach and I won't lose sleep over the fact that he left. I agree with a lot of the criticism that I've read here during the year, but man, I think that petition was an awful idea. It paints us as a bunch of impossible-to-please malcontents. Tennessee fans are intense and passionate at their best, but we're being cast in a very negative light right now.

The new coach will have a hell of a mess to clean up in that regard. Must find a way to change that perception, if only for recruiting purposes.

So the fans are getting ripped for the petition & now Martin says it woke them up! Typical for the media & the scorn to try & use that both ways!

It was obvious that he didn't start coaching until after the petition junk started. As for the petition, it was ON THE INTERNET. Meaning anyone in the world could sign it, not just UT fans.

It wasn't the petition and it wasn't the fans. The media can hype that all they want. The real reason he left was the new contract and some school boosters. The new contract did raise his salary to 1.8 million and add two years, but it also stated that if he was fired at anytime the final payout to him was 1 million dollars total. That means after he signed the contract that we could have fired him the next day and paid him a million and this is it. He would be out of a job and only pocket one million dollars. There is not a lot of security in a contract like that. I think he then looked at his team knew he couldn't win enough games to keep from getting fired and said I got to get out of here.
It seems that the big guys wanted him out and the contract reflected that it was a way to reward, but also easily fire him if he didn't perform with his own recruits. If I had another deal I would have left too. I suspect his deal with Cal is far less than 1.8 million a year.
