if the OP is referring to the fact that Martins trip to the final four, only to hire his same staff. was a total waste of time that could have been spent keeping our current sighnees. He could be on to something.

I can understand that question. I thought Marshall would be the guy and I really wanted him to be. That being said, I think it is entirely possible CCM could be a better hire. I like CCM a lot, but I would have been very pleased with Marshall. We got CCM and I understand the hire and gonna give the guy and the entire staff a chance.

Ask around, check contacts, and you will find that the word amongst administrators, media, and other coaches....Marshall is weird, quirky, and can be a real pr*ck. Yeah, they won the Not Invited Tournament, but how did they do both times they faced Zo's team, who won the long grind that is the conference season, and who went further in the MVC tournament. Trust me, you got the better of the two coaches. Oh, the team that Zo inherited was crap his first year, young his second year and he pulled off 26 years his third.

Missouri State fans would disagree. They said Cuonzo Martin was left with absolutely nothing when he took over. They said he built the entire team out of juco transfers.

MSU's starting five: Nafis Ricks, Sr. - JUCO. Jermaine Mallett, Sr. JUCO. Will Creekmore, Sr. (National Academic All-American), three year transfer from Boston University. He played at MSU his sophomore year at mid semester. Now applying to get a 5th year. Adam Leonard, Sr. - Transfer from E. Kentucky and played 2 years at MSU. Kyle Weems, Jr. - MVC Player of the year and honorable mention All American.

Not an entire team of juco transfers. In fact, Keith Pickens was to be a sophomore starter but tore up his knee during the summer, and Michael Porter (Otto's cousin) was another sophomore starter to be that had hip surgery due to a one-car auto accident where he laid in a ditch overnight for 5 hours before being found. He transferred away and may never play ball again. MSU had three freshman off the bench playing.

The team won 26 games and won the school's first regular season championship since being in the conference (20 years)with a large percentage of their firepower injured or laying in a friggin' ditch!

The man can coach!

Definitely not lauding them as great coaches. More just pointing out that the last regime, who so many are still wet in the pants over, did the same thing but how conveniently they forget.

What they did over this staff is win in the NCAA tourney, this staff still has zero NCAA wins or even games played.

Trying to pass Jones and Shay off as top notch assistants doesn't exactly help the case for Martin on this issue.

No, but it could be reason to hold off on the criticism of CCM's staff choices if UT still had such success for 5 years with them. If Pearl won with scrubs then I would assume CCM could possibly do the same. Not going to call these guys scrubs, time will tell and I know little about them. I am sure OP knows little about them as well, which is why it seems premature to crown them scrubs

The UT administration might have felt the same way, had they interviewed him. That's the biggest problem with this hire, If he had been 4 or 5th down the list of coaches who declined the job, then yeah we settle on Martin. But Hamilton said Martin was the first coach he interviewed, and apparently the first coach he offered. You look at what Oklahoma was able to hire after 2 losing seasons in a row, when UT is coming off 6 straight NCAA tournaments, it seems like we could have done better.

I am fine with the CCM hire. I think we got a good fit even if my preference at the time was Marshall. I have no contacts or inside sources who could inform me about Marshall's personality. I am just familiar with the last decade of his success because he has been a name in 3 UT coaching searches so I have kept interest. I was just agreeing that on paper, Marshall is the more proven candidate. That certainly doesn't mean I would take him at this point now thayt I am more familiar with CCM, or that CCM isn't or won't be better coach.

which means they also don't have a 30pt first round defeat

You'd prefer an NIT bid more than a 'AA invite that ended in a lopsided loss?

The play-in games seem to suggest otherwise - but you likely know best.

Your making the best case for Martin I've seen on the board so far, I'm not that familiar with his lineup other then most of them were seniors. Let's all hope your right about his coaching ability.

Marshall's good, but Martin's tenure at Missouri State was just as impressive as Marshall's has been at Wichita State.

Excluding post-season NIT performances, excluding recruiting, excluding regular season win rate, and excluding conference win rate, and you'd be right.

Remind me of how many conference championships Marshall won? Also, they have virtually the exact same winning percentage at those two schools.

When asked about how tough it will be to adjust to the SEC, the new assistants replied:

"The SEC will have to adjust to us, too."

I like it.
