Martin and Howland top 2

If you think 19 wins is average, then I suggest you check into a mental hospital.

Find me a fanbase who cares about winning who would accept 19 wins and a tournament appearance every 3 yrs. If you think that's more than average than you might want to take your own advice. I don't know anyone, outside of yourself apparently, who would consider 19 wins per season above average. And I don't mean a statistical average.

lots of info there but would be better if there was some additional context to those stats as in how were the respective programs doing the 5-10 years prior to each coaches arrival at each program.

This is true. I wonder if any of them were picked to finish next to last in their conference.

You wanted to tell me about definitions.

The definition of average, definitely isn't winning more games than 70% of other D1 teams lol

I know that Bill Foster rebuilt Duke and then Coach K took over.

Wisconsin pre-ryan:

highest winning % for 70 years before him was .615% and he was there for a year.

If Martin leaves, I won't be upset. I think he's already shown enough on what he can do here and it's been a disappointment. Two NIT appearances, one NCAA appearance and a Sweet 16 run out of 3 years he's been here. Personally, he'd be crazy to not take the Marquette job if offered while his stock is still high. Hart better be willing to pay big bucks for a good basketball coach or it's not going to get any better for Tennessee basketball anytime sooner.

I said I was not referring to statistical averages. Of course you choose to ignore that and lament over the definition, when I was upfront in what I meant. Yes, in a 30 game season, 15-15 would be average, therefore 19 is above average. Again I say, few fans around here or any other top 40 program would be content with 19-11 seasons, and would consider that as nothing but average/mediocre results given our resources.

For every K, Cal, Donovan etc you can name 50 coaches who had 5 bad years to start their career that were utter failures.

K, Cal, Donovan had something in common, they signed great recruits early on and turned that into major success in a couple of seasons.

How many 4 & 5 stars has Bo Ryan signed in the last 4 years?
