Marlin Lane should clearly be the starting running back, I'm not hating on Neal but he keeps trying to bounce his runs outside and he is not successful at all. Lane is hard nosed and gets the yards we need, reminds me of Hardestey.

This is not based off of one game, this is based off of Neal's subpar performance in the running game the last two years, and the way Lane has played when he gets his opportunities.

Thoughts?

I haven't seen any practices so I was keeping an open mind when everyone said Neal was out performing Lane. But I just don't see it either. I know its only one game, and I trust the coaches, but Neal has to stop trying to bounce outside every play.

I TOTALLY agree. He looks like the more efective runner. He may not have the home run threat of Neal or Young, but I will take the consistent 4-5 yds every time.

Neal is obviously the stronger back but Lane's vision between the tackles was much better last night. Glad we have the option of using both.

The Lane run @ the 4:47 mark in the 3rd quarter was one of my favorite plays (8 yd run & punished Wolff)

Oddly enough, Neal showed ability to bull between the tackles as well - when he did it. But given what I saw last night, I have to agree with you. I'm a Neal supporter but when consistently run down a dead end street common sense should tell you to take a more direct route to get somewhere.

We really need another option. We are not there yet in the running game if we intend to compete with the good teams in the SEC. May not get there this year.

I have never understood Lane being 3rd on the depth chart. Maybe it is a motivational thing?

The one thing we are truly lacking in the running game is true definite power back. Look for that to be fixed after this class in recruiting.

Disagree. Multiple backs with different strengths will leave opposing def coaches having to prepare for both. Marlin and Neal compliment one another.

We do not have a big back but Lane is the closest thing we have. He has to be consistant and I think that is the knock on him. All three backs played and did their part. I noticed Dooley getting on Neal for not getting in the lane and moving up field. He started that east/west dancing like last year. It will change though. This staff will correct it.

If Neal will stick it up in there and try to get 5 instead of losing 2 looking for 30 then yeah they will work well together. Neal just needs to understand that if you hit the whole enough one will break it big.

Agreed. Lane is quick and shifty but I love that he's not afraid of contact at all. But it's hard to not want to get a tough, physical back to throw into the rotation sometimes.

Lane looked very good. He should start and get 20-25 carries a game while Neal gets 10-15 and 3rd and long duties.

Also, I've seen enough of DY in the backfield (and I'm not a hater of local talent). He is NOT a SEC RB! Let's all remember that he was offered a scholarship when we were dreadful at fielding punts. That's what DY is and serves that role very effectively.

I didn't like that they kept running dy off tackle. Got to use his shifty better than that.

So hard to tell - both looked just okay in first half. Lane didn't turn it on until our O-Line was really dominating NCSU's defensive line later in the game.

I wonder too how many of Neal's runs were designed for going outside or if he was just doing that because he didn't see the holes.
