The next OC at Tennessee will be Kippy Brown. He's a guy with alot of history on the Hill and a prior relationship with Phil. Most imprtant of all, he will not be perceived as a threat to Phil. Stone Cold Lead Pipe Lock.

I think it would be a good hire, but I doubt he wants back into the college game that badly.

I'm thinking it's Brown's as well if he wants it. That isn't a bad move, IMO. It just has to go through. IMO, here are Phil's top 3 candidates:

1. Kippy Brown
2. Doug Marrone
3. Greg Adkins

Either way, we will likely need a new OC, QBc, TEc, and RBc. We may also need a new WRc and/or DBc.

I like KB. Do you think he would consider if he knew he was going to be the heir apparent?

He's gone from a OC in the league to a wr coach, so he cant be thrilled that the league's perception of him has taken a hit. That one of the major reason I see him coming back. If Adkins gets the job I will stroke freaking out.

Why would he leave an NFL coaching job to come back here and coach receivers and be a coordinator?

I would think that the NFL would pay a good receivers coach more than $350K-or so.

My guess is that a strong push will be made, they will make sure to get it into the papers, they might actually get him on campus......and then.....we have go in another direction. This could be a very interesting pick, like you say Rex...in the family...wealth of experience, including coordinating and head coaching....

The fact that many of us, me included, think Kippy or Marrone are our "home runs" just proves how inbred the mentality of UTK football has become. This should be a nationwide search where people will get fair consideration without regard to any prior connection with the Vols. It's time to get outside the box.

It's less about an inbred philosophy than it is everyday workplace stuff. It's like any other job opening. People are going to get a shot a lot of times based on who they know and who they've worked for.

I think that we are all separating what *should* happen from what *could* happen. I think that we see a true, open nation-wide search as an impossibility under the current administration and with the current mentality. We see these options as some of the better options of what could happen.

Yeah...but it's not that big of a community. A lot of people know a lot of people. There's something a little more going on here...don't you think?

we need another disciplinarian style coach who preaches focus and execution. those looking for a track record of creativity and making use of his team's greatest strengths are wasting their time. Anyone coming to town will run something very similar to what we've now seen for the past decade. CPF IS the offensive coordinator at UT. We have to hope for someone who can fill the gigantic gaps in his coaching style, accountability and discipline.

The Doug Marrone thing came out of left field. I know he was what a Tight Ends coach at UT, but he's worked his way up to NFL offensive coordinator. Why would he come back to UT?

He also worked at Georgia Tech longer than he did Tennessee, Did his name came up in that search at all?

My first thought is that if we're going to call a 1-AA coach, why not call Chris Hatcher (justin and GA have infected me, I guess). However, that is not completely fair to Watson, he has a ton of D-1 coordinating and head coaching experience. But...a Vandy man? Really? I don't think that I could bring myself to do it. Besides....I know it is home to him...but it seems weird to hire a guy who left UAB for Tenn Tech...seems like the wrong direction.

The problem with a guy like Kippy or Marrone is that CPF will be worried that it will be another situation like what he had with Cut. It will only be a bandaid and the guy will jump at the first job upgrade available. A guy like Adkins won't leave after a year or two(of course he probably won't have near the success either). It'd be nice to have a true search and find the right guy, but I don't see it happening.

Yeah Kippy wants to qualify for the NFL retirement from what I've read. He had no interest in returning to the college game before.

I don't think he was offered the OC job before Cutcliffe was brought back. I think it might have been a WR position coach at a high salary. So maybe an OC position might be enough to lure him back.

Losing Cut may be good in some ways but it definitely puts us in a hole recruiting QB's down the road. Cut has one of the finest QB development resumes in the country. He is a major reason Ainge progressed so far in the last 2 years.

I agree with everyone about running more of a spread/option offense. This type of offense is definitely not one that Cut could develop here. But, the problem is, now we are inevitably back to "A REBUILDING PHASE" again. There is no way that with this many new coaches and an entirely new offensive scheme and a new starting QB that we are any better next year and probably the year after either. In fact, if this is the way the team goes we may be disappointed for a long while b/c we haven't been recruiting for this type of offense.-jmho

What makes me scratch my head is that Cut is going to coach in the bowl game this year, however in 98 he left before the NC game. Makes no sense.
