Mapu's dad says he is not in playing shape and may redshirt. A little surprising considering how well Mormons are supposed to take care of themselves, but he is a big fella.

Still, not that big a shock . . . I would think it would be a lot harder on a big guy like that to take all that time off.

I hope they don't have to play him out of necessity if he is not ready.

Of course, it is a long way between now and September, so things could change. Maybe I'm optimistic, but I'm excited about seeing the kid play. I'd be happy to work out with him to get him ready if he doesn't mind carrying me around the track

Good info. Thanks.

Thats a bad sign, UT really needed him to play this year. Apparently Bolden's not playing as well as everyone had hoped he would, and the other top prospect at DE is out with injury. Ashe was within a hair of being kicked off the team permaently, if there was more depth at DT he probably would have been.

The D-Line is getting thin. A few guys like Harrell may end up playing the whole game.

i said this all through the other Mapu discussions and people were giving me crap for saying that

no we were giving you crap cause you said there was no way that he would be strong enuff and he might not but nobody argued that he might not be in playing shape that would be rediculous coming off a two year mission. i still say he will regain all his strength before football season i dont know about if he gets into playing shape though. practice shape and game shape are completely different and i dont even know if hes in practice shape right now and if hes not he might have to takea redshirt this year

I have a feeling Mapu's dad is covering for his son not being the best option right now. If your son was in good enough shape (even if it isn't the optimal fitness level) to compete for and win the starting job, then why on earth would you come out and ask the coach to sit him for another year???

one of the best moves coach Chavis could make here is what most defensive coaches do in these situations. Take a 2nd string LB and make him a light def end....take a 2nd string def end and teach him to be a tackle. On defense speed kills, and if you have a fast defense in the SEC you can win. The SEC primarily plays its best athletes on defense, this downshift on the depth chart while giving up strength and/or expierience.... gain speed and quickness. Thats very tough to coach against.

Ummm, dan, have you watched the Vols in the past years? That is about all Chavis does. He bumps a player down one "weight class". CB's to S, S's to OLB, OLB's to MLB, MLB's to DE, DE's to DT's, and even some DT's to OL.

If I'm not mistaken, Chavis is doing this with Ayers at DE instead of LB. I'm pretty sure Ayers was lining up there in the O&W Game anyway..

So, I guess we just ignore the article in the Chattanooga Sunday paper talking about possibly moving McBride to DE to get Demonte more playing time and how he is currently backing up Harrell on the depth chart? Their was another good article about how Coach Fulmer is letting Coach Cut take care of his group like Coach Chavis does his group. I would link those articles but I've tried before and couldn't, user error.

Probably a user interface error.

Personally I believe we are in good shape depthwise on the dl. Yeah, a few injuries would hurt, but overall we have at least 9 that can come in and contribute without Mapu. I'd love to have him but if he red shirts this year, so be it.

Can he not get in shape before sept.? If he can't go McBride most definitely won't play DE. And we're one injury away from being in trouble.

Chavis should be able to pick his battles early. I still feel Turk could line up in or outside pending yardage/down situations.
Look for Mapu to RS. If he had only been able to return as first expected there would be no concerns of his physical/mental acclimation.
