I just don't get it! I still hear this phrase every week. Some people make it sound like one man was on the field and playing the Gators. What about the game plan to try to score more points than a loaded Florida team each year? What about Manning having to force the ball into double coverage because the running game was not working? And the lack of time in the pocket didn't help things either at times when the rushing wasn't working great against the great teams we played. What about the other players that admitted the following year that when things got tough they would look to Manning to win it for them. That following year they had to step up to the plate and win everything as a team! That was a comment by a UT player after winning the 98 NC game. Do you remember how we finally started beating Florida in the Manningless years? Run, Run, Run and more run. Not out score one of the greatest offensive machines in football.
It was a great day when he won the Super Bowl because it had all started again. He can't win the big one. The Super Bowl is in Florida and he will never win in Florida. Well he won the big one. He didn't deserve the MVP that game but got it anyway. If the Colts play great it's always because of him and if they lose it's always because of his poor play. Glad I didn't play QB when I was younger!
He is the greatest player to ever play at TN IMO. He is one of the top 5 NFL QB's in history IMO. He came back to our school as a senior when he didn't have to and single handed put UT at the top of the college football list for publicity. A good guy and a great family. Why some choose to pick on him I will never know.

Who is picking on him again?

I know people were saying he can't win the big game, but he won the super bowl....So this should have come to an end.

It's more than Manning. The whole "(insert name) can/can't win (insert team)/big game is probably the most intellectually dishonest argument that exists involving any team sport. I like Manning, but "he" hasn't won a SB, though the Colts did. Manning never lost to FL, but the Vols did.

Look, there has never been a single football player, ever, that won a game. Not Montana, not Herschel Walker, not Staubach, carry it as far as you like. Football is the ultimate team game. Heck, there's at minimum three distinct phases (teams) of the game, nevermind breaking the kicking game into FG's/kicking/punts, each of which can turn a game for good or ill.

Name all the great players that never got a ring, at any level, because of who they played for. While you're at it, can you imagine listing the average players that DID get rings because of who they played for? Put Jordan on the wrong team and he'll have scored a slew of points and played in all the all-star games but a championship? Nope. What, Barry Sanders not "great" because he never even sniffed a SB? I suppose that argument would be that if he could have rushed for 4,500yds a season he'd have gotten a ring or two? Eric Berry sucks because we only won 5 games?

I guess fans have to say such things, nature of the beast I suppose, but an individual can only do what they do at the highest level they can manage. Individual accomplishment is just that, don't confuse it with team accomplishment. Every all-star game you've ever watched is going to be mostly populated by people that did not win a championship.

As for Manning and FL, IIRC Manning's passing yds in his Sr yr loss to FL roughly doubled the output of the entire '98 offense against FL. So how does Tee get credit for "beating" FL? That was, and it's not even close, Al Wilson et al's doing.

No big deal--Manning is making millions more in the NFL than any other florida player--that's all that matters. Name one good fla QB in the history of the nfl? All have been busts! (grossman, johnson, palmer, weurffel, reaves, matthews, spurrier, etc.)

By the way, nothing against Tee. He was a very solid QB. Wished we had him now.

Moot point. No one cares anymore. I'd say peyton went on and made a pretty good qb don't you think? LOL.

I like Manning but he is not the best player ever at UT he is the best QB but he didnt beat Fla. I think the SB win shed the big game chocker label anyway.

Yeah I'd hate to have a chocker label.

I agree to some extent it's the argument that they used to keep him from the heisman. Even during the 2006 Superbowl the announcer was like yeah I think he should be okay playing in Miami cause it's not Gainesville. I mean seriously I wanted someone to kick him in the jaw. It's annoying but it's never going to die. It is what it is.

relax who cares.
it would be a pretty phoney fan base if every friggin fan loved the guy and didnt form thier own opinions.
I am soso on manning and always felt like UT was here long before he was, and will be long after him.

Give him our 1998 defense, and he beats Florida. The three years Manning started against UF, the defense allowed 62, 35 and 33 points. The year after he was gone, it allowed 17.

I could care less, anyway. On our 1997 SEC Championship trophy, it doesn't say "SEC Champions, but Peyton lost to Florida." But if the Gators want to dream that it does, then their 1996 national championship trophy says "National Champions, but they needed a mulligan against FSU."

Here is a piece that I wrote on Feb 5 2007 right after Colts won the super bowl on a blog!

Peyton Manning
Monday Febuary 5, 2007
Hey whats up everyone? We all seen Peyton do something the other night that several of the "so-called" expert said he could not do, He won a Championship! Ok first off I am a Cowboys fan and for them all the way, but once they were eliminated, I was pulling for my boy Peyton and for those of you that may not know me, I am a huge Vols fan which is pretty easy to see! But I have heard for several years now that Peyton couldnt win a big game, going all the way back to college and no one even gives the man credit for helping UT get its first SEC championship in several years at the time! Not only that, Peyton set a foundation for what followed over the next few years as some of the top talent in the country wanted to come to UT and play with Manning! Then he gets to the NFL and helps turn a miserable Colts team around! I am not one to say that Peyton did this on his own, because he didnt, it took 50 men devoted to one thing to get this team a championship, but of course when they didnt win who was getting blamed? Peyton! It takes a team to win and it takes a team to lose! Peyton could throw for 500yards and 5 TDs a game and if the Colts lost people would say Peyton choked! But they won, then no one would give him credit, they would talk about how good the defense played or how the Kicker saved the day, i mean come on at some point dont theses people have to give Manning alittle respect? Peyton did not have the best postseason this year, but he showed the true ability of a leader as he made the big plays at the right time! I mean come on, who comes back from 18 points down to team that has won 3 Championships since 2001? Peyton showed great leadership and proved to everyone that he is a big game QB! It really feels good to see Peyton get his ring and I wish he would tell all the critics that have rode him for the past 13 years from Knoxville to Indy to kiss his A$$, but we all know Peyton is too classy for that! he has it and it can never be taken away, so to all the critics from major sports reports down to Gators fans down to people that just dont like Peyton, you can now seal the lips! Congrats to Peyton and the Colts!!!!

Correction! He never beat Spurrier. Even on the night of his jersey retirement the vols got beat by South Carolina coached by Spurrier. Also keep in mind that one person doesnt win or lose games.

And they forced five turnovers....and still needed a Travis Taylor drop in OT and a missed field goal to win.

He still won the SECC, there are a lot of players who have been through UT that have not beat the gators. Why is this even a subject?

Its a pitiful and lame attempt for the Gators to remind us that one of UT's most famous and successful former players didn't play on a team that beat them. I for one don't hear any UGA fans bragging that Casey Clausen couldn't beat the dawgs. Stupid Gators!! :ermm:

Who knows, maybe they see the writing on the wall and realize that playing UTK will not be a glorified scrimmage game anymore and they are bringing up that turd of information.
