Full disclosure: I am a full card-carrying negavol. This happened for me at some point during the Kentucky game last year. When the team showed up unprepared and without motivation, my doubts about Dooley, the doubts that I had tried hard to push out of my mind, crept to the forefront. Then, to my amazement, a team with no QB and not enough talent to match-up with a community college beat my beloved Vols. I watched in horror as the once proud Tennessee Volunteers laid down and rolled over like helpless puppies. In short, I quit on Dooley when his team did.
Since then, I have taken the time to examine the evidence and have come to the conclusion that Derek Dooley is not now, nor will he ever be successful at Tennessee. The reasons are numerous and many reasonable fans on this board have already reached this conclusion.
First, there is The Record.
Derek Dooley is:
Dooley at LA Tech: 17-20 .459 (12-12) .500
Dooley at UT: 13-15 .464 (4-13) .235
Total: 30-35 .462 (16-25) .390
Dooley against ranked opponents at LA Tech: 0-7
Dooley against ranked opponents at UT: 0-11
Total: 0-18 (Yankee Vol)
2-27 against teams with winning records (tm3)
4-13 in the SEC; 1-7 last year
There is nothing Dooley has done in the past that makes me believe in the future.
Second, there is The Quitting. For me, there is nothing more offensive and inexcusable that a team quitting on its coach. I have already mentioned KY, but CDDs teams have consistently quit in the second half of almost every tough game.
Tennessee has been outscored in the second half:
Oregon, 35-0
Bama, 28-0
LSU, 21-0
Bama, 31-0
Arkansas, 28-0
Florida, 27-6 (PowerSweep)
A coachs ability to prepare and motivate his team for a full 60 minutes is not a debate that anyone should have more than once. If he cant do it then he cant do his job. 60 minute football games are in the job description.
Third, there are a plethora of Logical Reasons. His teams are mentally weak. His staff consistently fails to make adjustments. They are consistently outcoached. You can add to this list as you like, but the reasons are many.
Consider this; Derek Dooley has never, ever beaten anyone he shouldnt have. He has never beaten an evenly matched team (i.e. UF last night). He has, however, managed to lose games that he shouldnt have. This is not the mark of a successful leader. This is not the mark of Tennessee football.
Therefore, this is my pledge as a negavol.
I will continue to support my Vols.
I will continue to support my University.
I will continue to attend games, and buy merchandise.
But, as long as the orange pants are on the sidelines, I will no longer hold any hope that we will be anything more than mediocre.
I will hold great satisfaction when we win, but I will no longer be surprised when we lose.
I will not drink the Kool-aid.
I will not buy the hype.
I will not criticize the players because of the ineptitude of their coach.
Finally, I will hope for a better day at some point in the future.
This is my pledge as a negavol.
