Mandatory Minimums

Ever seen 5 pounds of reefer? I have. It
s a lot! :cool2:

Point was though he went to prison because he didnt just have a joint, or an ounce, but 5 pounds. That is absolutely going to land you in prison for trafficking and intent to distribute. It isn't legal. You want to smoke weed I am all for that. You wanna sell it I am all for that too but man do it where it's legal because you aren't going to win me over with your sob story about breaking the law and getting caught.

The lack of consequence crowd isn't surprising.

I dont really care if people smoke..like in an industrial setting..as long as it aint going to start a fire. Bars, restaurants, stores, that is gross.

You have a choice to work or eat at these establishments. No one is putting a gun to your head.

It amazes me that people willingly walk in to bars and are offended that smoking is going on. It is called a bar. What next... will we no be able to drink in a bar next?

if I am convicted of securities fraud should I be allowed to be back in the banking industry? What if I am convicted of felony malpractice should I be allowed to be a doctor again?

Those require licensing so they don't really compare to voting or whatever. It's not a normal privilege to practice medicine.

Its not either/or.

When it comes down to the cost of housing all of these people, it will eventually come down to either/or.

We are probably at "peak prison" already. There's no way we can continue t lock people up on these petty charges without the costs becoming to prohibitive.

Other than not arresting people for said petty charges (just accept it as something that likely won't change right now for the intent of this discussion) what would be an acceptable medium of punishment?

Would you support something like community service as opposed to jail time for minor offenses? Work in and around the community doing things that need to be done? Or like a public works kind of deal like the CCC depending on the length of sentence?

Would something like that be "fair" as opposed to jail time?

It would depend on what the crime was. If it is drug possession, feeding the homeless, or selling lemonade or loose cigarettes, I think most (reasonable) people would agree that they shouldn't be illegal in the first place... so no time should be served either way.

Also, keeping people in jail for weeks/months at a time because they can't pay to get out until their court date needs to be looked at. I think the guy that ended up spending 3 years in Rikers Island waiting on a court date needed $2,000 to get out. How much more money did it cost to house and feed that guy for 3 years than it would have to just let him sit for 2 weeks or 30 days?

Yes, you should. When take away a persons way to earn money, you simply increase the odds of them becoming repeat offenders.
By your logic then: When you tell pedophiles they can't have children anymore...

So the guy that runs a ponzie scheme and steals numerous people's retirement monies should be allowed to return to the investment business after his 4-5 year stint in prison?...... You're a genius 88
