I can't believe these poll results.
Look at Malzahn's history. He won 10 games at Arkansas with McFadden and Felix Jones, but they had freaking Casey Dick and Mitch Mustain at QB. So they averaged 155 yards passing and led the SEC at almost 230 yards rushing...and that was with a truncated Houston Nutt hand-cuffed version of the offense.
He got to Tulsa in 2007 and they couldn't run the ball very well, so they threw a lot more, averaging 386 yards passing and 172 yards rushing. A year later, their offensive line was better, so they ran more, averaging 268 yards rushing (almost 100 more than the year before) and 310 yards passing.
At Auburn right now we're averaging 260 yards passing and 254 yards rushing. We're balanced because we can be.
Look at those averages again from year to year.
2006: 155 passing ; 230 rushing
2007: 386 passing ; 172 rushing
2008: 310 passing ; 268 rushing
2009: 260 passing ; 254 rushing
The point is, he isn't stuck in one mold of how to gain yards and score points. If he doesn't have a prolific passer, then he'll run more (2006). If he can't run as much as he would like, he'll throw more (2007). If he can do both reasonably well, he'll be pretty damn balanced (2008 and 2009).
I have no doubt that if he was in control of Tennessee's offense, you would be 5-0, Crompton or Stevens would at least be adequate, and you would be running the ball for 250+ yards. And if you don't think Crompton would be adequate, check Todd's stats from last year. The entire quagmire that was our offense last year didn't help, but he went from a 106 rating last year to a 160 rating this year. From 5 TDs and 6 picks to 12 TDs and 1 pick.
I could be wrong, but I have no evidence to think otherwise. If Malzhan was your OC (and by default NOT our OC), you would have won the game.
