I've been to this beach where he drowned in Costa Rica. It's no joke and I had a bit of a scare there myself. It's Caribbean side but the surfing is pretty good.

Thats why I enjoy the ocean strictly from the beach or the hotel balcony! You wont find sharks, jellyfish, or rip currents there! If I have the need to swim, a nice swimming pool does me just fine!

I actually got caught in a riptide once with a friend, we swam out sorta far but not what we thought was very far and started to swim back and realized after a bit we weren't getting closer to shore and seemed to be going further out. It wasn't a very fast one but still was pushing us out.

Lucky for us we have recently just watched an episode of something that showed how to swim out of it back to shore. We didn't panic but for a few moments it seemed pretty scary. Now I don't go out much further than knee deep.
