Majors and Jackie Sherrill are doing an appearance on 104.5 the zone and though this may be obvious Majors really hates ole Phil still. When asked about comparing his situation when he took the job to Dooleys situation he walked into he said, " Mine was tough, it took us a long time to get it where it needed to be lots of peaks and valleys and it was a rebuild, but I think Dooleys was tougher maybe, What Lane Kiffin did was grab the wheel of an 18 wheeler that was without brakes and headed down Monteagle/ Sewanee mountain and it was out of control. Then he bailed on the UT (for his dream job) and 5 or 10 of those hotshot recruits bailed on us too, then came Dooley who took over a way worse situation that Lane did. The kids who played or Lane and that other guy, neither liked Dooley in the begining but he is smart and if the fans do not run him off he will get 'em fixed but it may take more than 2 1/2 years but they are better today than they were when "the other guy" was let go and much better than when Lane jumped on 'em"

I keep chuckling at the fact that they are broadcasting from a low testosterone center with jackie Sherrill as a guest. Irony of ironies.

I've heard Majors make that analogy before. There's some bias in there, but also some truth.

I just think it is funny he won't say Phillip, Phil, or Coach Fulmer, it is "the other guy". Man what a grudge.

They just announced that the remote is being done in Maryland Farms (Brentwood) and the coaches will be there to shake hands, take photos and give autographs until 3pm. In case anyone is interested and can get over there.

Given the opportunity Johnny gave Phillip at UT and then for Phillip to campaign for the HC job at midseason 1992, you can't hardly blame him. It's likely that Phillip would have never been offered an OC slot at a big time school. It's also a fact that Majors handed over a talent laden team with quality depth that he spent years rebuilding.

Would ole Phil still get the love and old Johnny still be the villain without the 98 Trophy on the shelf?

Majors hates Sherrill too. Hated all his assistant coaches. (Sherrill was an asistant at Pitt, then took the HC job when Johnny left for Tenn. Sherrill had Marino at QB when Pitt visited UT in 1983. 'It will be fun to visit Tennessee and beat your old boss in the process." (paraphrased). but close. Score--Pitt 13-3.

Johnny Majors was a great coach - in his last 3 full seasons as HC, the Vols won an SEC championship, tied for another, and were 29-6-2. That seems like something out of a dream compared to the present dismal state of the program.

In 1992, however, Phlip Fulmer became acting HC when Majors had heart problems. Fulmer made the mistake of leading the Vols to impressive wins over #14 UGA and #4 UF and a #4 ranking in the AP polls. When Coach Majors returned, UT proceeded to lose to an Arkansas team that finished the season 3-7-1, then to #4 Bama, and USCe. The loss to USCe cost the Vols a berth in the SECCG game - they finished 3rd in the SEC East. In those long-ago days, the standards for the football program were high - players and fans alike expected the Vols to win championships.
Coach Majors felt that Fulmer betrayed him by campaigning for his job. No doubt he did. But the record speaks for itself - the team wanted Fulmer, not Majors as HC.

Johnny Majors is rightfully a UT football legend, and deserved to have his #45 retired. But 20 years of bitterness towards UT and Fulmer only lessens his own reputation.

Majors is probably my all time favorite UT coach. Charismatic, none the less. He could make a loss feel okay (90% of the time).

FYP, Phil started in 1980 and was there all the way

Had UT not won the '98 championship and everything else stayed the same, Phillip would have likely been gone after the 2000 season and most certainly after 2002

I know when he started. He wasn't given the OC job until 1989, which at the time raised a few eyebrows. My point was that Phillip was unlikely to get an OC position at a peer program.

Yes, offensive line coaches did not typically become OC's back in those days. That was an eye-opener...

104.5 proof...lol! Kicking it old school
