It was good to hear Rocky Top....even if it was in the background. Also, their band director, Joel Denton is a UT grad!!! We were in the PRIDE together.

Also FYI, they had to get the kids up at 1:00 AM this morning. They (as well as the other bands) had to do a run-through of their performance at 3 AM for the TV cameras.

This is great. I went to Ooltewah High School...

But I'm not sure what Denton was thinking going with the clown suits. That man has been there forever. :dunno: Maybe it was the only way they would get invited to play there... haha.

Back in the stone age when I was at Lenoir City, Macy's invited them every year, but Ric Best the director would never accept...

Not a better director around, though. I've always heard it was due to the sheer cost of the trip. I can't imagine that many, much less all of the kids could afford a trip like that.

That's not the way I understand it. It's a three year process of being accepted and you have to send tons and tons of video tapes from performances + the routine you plan on using. Atleast for high school bands.

He is a good family friend and he said it was because of the whole rat race of being in New York City with that many students to be responsible for.. In those days alot of the band students had the means for a trip like that...We went to Washington D.C. one year and did on average 4 marching competitions every year out of state...If not we held fund raiser for the students that needed help....Oh, by the way LC plays the same Rocky Top music that UT plays, because Ric was a former Pride member....

FWIW, I was in the LC band and we had a NYC trip torpedoed by the school b/c of that very reason. Didn't even think of that.
