Lucky to have Pearl and not Knight

It appears that TT is struggling both to win games and to retain players.

Texas Tech story
Typical Knight bashing. He was only a candidate for the UT job in the minds of people who vastly overestimated the draw of the UT job. For that matter, does that mean Pearl has trouble retaining players because Tyler Smith isn't at UT?

Also, Knight's first year at Texas Tech, he took a team that won 9 games the year before and won 20+ games and made the NCAA tournament. Bruce Pearl is not the first coach to improve a team in his first year.

A kid from my high school, who is actually in my english class signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Texas Tech. Turns out Tech doesn't want him anymore.
Tech changes its mind

Do you think BN would have come him all orange, Built the momentum for the program to succeed even before the first game and said how happy he was to be here... I don't think so. You done good Mr Hamilton! :clapping:

I can't believe there's still even any backhanded cracks about Bobby Knight. This is America dammit!!!

Sure, he has continually acted like a morally retarded jerk with no self-control throughout his career.

But he has WON!!! I repeat, HE HAS REPEATEDLY WON!!

What kind of commie criticizes a man for mere moral or behavioral faults when he wins!?!!?!?!??

I am so sick and tired of the pinko wussies who don't recognize that all that matters is Wins & Losses and not getting caught.

I was among those who would have welcomed Knight here. With the benefit of hindsight, we are better off with a younger coach who feeds energy into every room he walks into.
As for the draw of the UT job, Knight is at Texas Tech right now (not exactly basketball heaven).
I made the post to point out how much better UT is right now than TT. Good work, Mr. Hamilton.

Hindsight 20/20. I am extremely pleased with everything Coach Pearl and staff have done. However, Bobby Knight is a quality coach and I would have also been pleased with him. Some people just can't except the way other people coach. Is he crude, gruff, self absorbed? Yes, but he has got the job done and IMO will continue until he retires from coaching.

Knight has a friendly AD at Tech and the lack of media in West Texas suits him perfectly. That said, I agree with the idea that UT needed a more long term solution to its coaching situation. My post was simply a defense of one of the five greatest college coaches of all time.

Don't count your chickens before they hatch...I believe we started out 9-0 in Buzz's first season. I like Pearl and I hope that he builds our program to the caliber it was under Jerry Green (4 20 win seasons, 3 tourney appearances in 4 years. Top 5-10 team.) However, I am not about to say that I would rather have Pearl than Knight and his 800+ wins. That is ridiculous.

I didn't know that Sen. Joe Mccarthy posted on this board.

I would not have welcomed Knight because I am philosophically opposed to some of his tactics. He is one of the 5 greatest in wins/losses and development of some players but not in terms of his respect (or lack thereof) for others. IMHO, the wins are not worth the other.

:D What is going to be a shame is. As soon as we lose a couple of games in a row, we will have some say the coach is no good. We should have got someone like Knight. Bud's 9-0 start was not his players. Pearl has taken Bud's players and the quality has improved with his coaching.

Obviously, you've never heard Knight speak about Henry Iba, Clair Bee, Tony Hinkle, Pete Newell, or any of the other old coaches he holds in the highest regard. Nobody in basketball respects the history of the game and those who came before him more than Bob Knight. I can't criticize him for his utter disdain for the media and referees like Ted Valentine, because I detest those folks every bit as much as Coach Knight does.

I've never doubted his dedication/love for the game and it's history. I don't care if he likes/dislikes the media, refs or anyone else; that is certainly his perogative and irrelevant. However, he has a long history of abusive and nasty behavior towards subordinates, players, and others. These things don't take away from his wins but they certainly affect my respect for him as a person. As such, I personally would not want my alma mater associated with him.

That's fair enough. I think the graduation rate of his players, coupled with the fact that the overwhelming majority of his former players are fiercely loyal to him, outweighs the outbursts. I certainly recognize the contrary position is a reasonable one.

Actually Green had 4 tourney appearances in 4 years.

Good to see Uncle Jed's influence in full effect at Oklahoma. He's helped take them from a preseason top 10 team to losing at home to that basketball genius Quinn Snyder and his mediocre Mizzou Tigers. I'm sure Sampson is thrilled to have him around. Maybe he can advise Kelvin to tell the folks in Norman to go to Wal-Mart if they're dissatisfied.
