I've done it too. Missed the last half of several Vol seasons the past few years for the same reasons.

But gator fans are spoiled rotten IMO. They get way more breaks than they deserve. So it'll be hard for them to give it up.

Anyone watching Muschamp's presser on the SEC Network? He has "no idea" why the refs put 7 seconds on the clock. Ummmm...maybe because your players intentionally laid on the pile in order to try to run time off the clock and did not get up when told to....

I'd have to think they (the school...I know the fans would like him) would stay away from Petrino.

Not sure how realistic Briles is since he just signed a big new contract at a currently competitive program.

Stoops isn't leaving OU for UF.

Jumping around within conference is also fairly rare for head coaches, so I also wouldn't be surprised were neither Freeze nor Mullen to end up at UF.

Yeah, but Stephens was less than 5 or 6 years ago.

It's one thing to remember a QB that recent.


It's another thing to 20 years from now to pull up a guy who wasn't good enough to hold the starting job on the team or who played poorly and lost it.

What do you think though? Who do you put on the short list? I agree about Petrino, I think Briles is not really in play, but stranger things have happened in regards to other SEC coaches staying in conference. Kirby Smart seems like a long shot after this Muschamp situation.

Just off the top of my head in the SEC:

Houston Nutt Arkansas to Ole Miss
Tommy Tuberville Ole Miss to Auburn
Gerry DiNardo Vanderbilt to LSU
Bill Curry Alabama to Kentucky
Doug Dickey Tennessee to Florida

Outside the SEC
Steve Sarkisian Washington to USC

I can't imagine that Mullen would turn down Florida to stay at Miss State.

Congrats, that's 5 head coaches doing so within the SEC in ...a 44 year span.

That's the point, it does happen, but it's not that common.


And to be fair Curry's a bit of a different example. He felt he wasn't given a fair contract so just left for somewhere. (You're also using an example from a period when schools like Ole Miss were considered at best stepping stones and seemed like they wouldn't be able to keep up competitively with the bigger schools...presumably relative to finances and what was brought in.)

It'd be hard...they'd have to throw a lot of money at Briles plus a payoff to Baylor...I have to be honest, I'm not familiar with either how much UF would be willing to pay, how big Briles's contract currently is, or how much of a buyout he has.


Why would Muschamp affect looking at Smart? Because Muschamp was a DC? If they think the guy's a good up and coming coach, I'm not sure they'd pass looking at him just because he shared a similar coaching staff position as their last coach.

Because AD's are seeing that working for Saban is not rubbing off on assistants. Dooley failed miserably, Muschamp has struggled and Smart is a great unknown.

Muschamp was at Texas 3 years as a DC after working for Saban; that's not really an association an AD is going to make when looking at Kirby...just because Muschamp worked for Saban 7 years ago.



Plus, Jimbo Fisher seems to be doing fine. Mike Haywoood's not been bad. Mark Dantonio has done pretty well also. (Verdict's probably still out on McElwin and Pruitt, at this point.)

Muschamp is a good DC, I would hire him as a DC. I liked both Jimbo and Muschamp when they were at LSU, I thought Jimbo was HC material, just don't think Muschamp is.

What Muschamp did at Texas has little to do with it. He learned from and was groomed by Saban for the most part, minus a few years at the FCS and D2 level. Same with Kirby. Every fanbase in the South has wanted to gobble up Saban assistants hoping they'll strike gold and I find it hard to believe a few AD's in this region haven't had it in the back of their minds as well, especially when they get a ringing endorsement from Saban himself.

Jimbo is a poor example as he spent years with the Bowden's before coming into contact with Saban and had spent a number of years at the BCS level already, plus he proved himself in their program as OC before being promoted. Same with McElwain, and he spent time in the NFL. D'antonio might fit the bill but even he had 10 yrs of actual coaching experience, excluding time as a GA, before he got to Saban. I'm referring to the young guys that Saban took a chance on and groomed from the get-go that have very little outside influences in their schemes, mentality, etc. Dooley, Smart and even Muschamp have/had that going for them.

I can say with absolute certainty that Foley will not hire Smart if he indeed lets Muschamp go. I'm not sure there's a UF fan who would disagree either. Foley may not say why Smart wouldn't be a candidate but if you hire one guy from a tree and it's a disaster you'd be hard pressed to go out and immediately hire the next guy from that tree.
