Let me apologize first, as I strive not to be a negavol. I prefer to look at statistics and results before I make my judgement. It is out of frustration with our current state in Tennessee that I decided to take a look at how Louisiana Tech has done without Dooley over the past few years...
What I found was very interesting. They hired Sonny Dykes who was an offensive coordinator at Arizona. He has worked under Mike Leach at TX Tech and Mike Stoops at Arizona. Look at these improvements in LA Tech's performance in his first year:
"In his first season Dykes put his high octane offense into effect, resulting in him being one of only four of the nation's 22 new head coaches to improve a team's conference record from the year before. Dykes' exciting brand of offense improved in several areas of the NCAA statistical ranks including passing offense (91st in 2009 to 62nd in 2010) and total offense (66th to 52nd) while the team's average offensive national rank improved from 65th in 2009 to 54th in 2010."
In the Coach's Poll they are ranked 33rd. They are also going bowling this year. Their record this year is 8-4 (6-1 in conference). Two of those four losses were decided by 2 pts or less. One loss was decided in overtime. Easily could have been a 10 or 11 win team this year.
I know their conference is weaker than Tennessee's, and their schedule is nowhere near our strength of schedule. However, LA Tech does not have the facilities, money, and name recognition Tennessee football has. It just goes to show what a talented/knowledgeable coach can do with young football players on the field.
